“Wren is. I’m not sure about Sunny. I didn’t check in on her since I’m sure she has her room booby-trapped.” She flapped her hand around. “Anyway, only one thing will help in this situation.”

“What’s that?”

She didn’t answer but he already knew what it was. She just didn’t want to say it out loud. He didn’t blame her. Despite that fucker kicking her ass, she didn’t want to off the father of her son.

Though, that would be the best solution to keep her safe.

He held out the joint again. “Sure you don’t want a hit?”

She sighed and shook her head. “Someone needs to stay sober for the kids.”

He shook his head and chuckled. “Think I can’t function after smokin’ a little dope?”

“I don’t know, can you?”

“It’s pot. Ain’t heroin. One makes you chill, the other makes you useless. If anyone needs to fuckin’ chill right now, it’s you.”

“I can’t help it that I’m worried. The day I’ve been dreading is almost here.”

He snagged his beer to wash away some of his cotton mouth. “Babe, he don’t know where you are. Suggest movin’ Baby Bird’s school before the end of the month like we talked about. Get your house on the market ASAP. Sooner you dump that, the better.” Then the only thing left of her life Vic the Dick knew about would be her business. The only good thing about that was she rarely cooked at the same location. The bad thing was that motherfucker could set her up with a fake booking as a trap.

For fuck’s sake, that could be bad. ”Think he’ll seek you out?”

“He’s not going to be happy when he can’t find me or Wren. I already know he’s pissed about the PFAs and the fact he’ll never get even partial custody of our son again. Hell, he’ll be lucky if he gets supervised visitation. He’s not going to accept any of that and simply go away. He’s had more than a year to stew about it.”

Yeah, in the past he’d spent many a month in the joint planning on exacting revenge on whoever put him there. He hadn’t been out for blood with this Gentry asshole, but now that the man’s former family was living with Stone, he wouldn’t hesitate to do what needed to be done. No intervention by the pigs would be needed.

“I’m meeting the real estate agent at the house this weekend. Luckily, she said the market is still hot so it’ll sell fast. If I need to, I can take whatever equity is left, if any, and move somewhere he’ll never find us.”

Stone didn’t like the sound of that. It had only been a couple of days since she’d moved in and now she was already planning on shipping out? That would leave him fucked when it came to Sunny. He’d be scrambling to find someone to watch her who wasn’t a sweet butt. Until he hada lead for a possible house mouse, Taryn was his best option. “Court’s gonna let you take your boy outta state?”

“I don’t know. I don’t see why not if Vic is a threat.”

“He ain’t a threat to Baby Bird. Just to you.”

When that reality hit her, Taryn collapsed into the chair next to him, dropped her head, fisted her hair, and released a scream she tried but failed to muffle.

Hopefully, it didn’t wake the damn kids. He didn’t want them overhearing this line of conversation.

He took another hit of the joint before licking his fingertips and putting it out by pinching the end. He tucked the remainder into the tin he had put in the front pocket of his jeans since he’d left his cut inside. “Got you covered, babe. We agreed, you do for me, I do for you. Here’s one thing I’m gonna do. Once he’s out, gonna have me or one of my brothers shadowin’ you at all times. If I ain’t with you, one of them will be. You go nowhere without one of us.”

She squeezed her eyes shut and groaned. “Stone…”

“Nope. Ain’t a negotiation. It’s a rule. One that ain’t gonna be broken. Tell me you get me.”

“I hear what?—”

“No. That ain’t it.”

“Listen—”

“No.”

“But—”

“No.”

She growled.
