“No, but I haven’t. I followed you into tech when I always wanted to go into the restaurant business. And that restaurantbusiness wasn’t even your dream first. It was mine. But you did it and you did it better than I could have and faster. AndI have to be somewhere where I am standing on my own two feet.”

“Well, it’s not like when you go, we’re not going to be in contact. You can still bounce ideas off of us.”

“Yeah. But my point is, like, I want to be your sister. I don’t want you to be my adviser. I need to do this for me,” shepleaded.

“Okay. I hear you and I support you. I wish that we couldcome down and help you prepare because—and I know you know this—but this is going to be a lot of work. And you were here to help us.”

“Yes, I know. But I’m ready. And Auntie Mack is there. Lani’s going to come down with me. You know, hopefully your team willbe able to handle things so that you guys can come down when we open in a couple months. But I’m really excited.”

“And Mom and Dad know?”

“Yeah, I FaceTimed them earlier. They’re really excited too. They want to drive up from Savannah in a couple weeks to helpout a little bit here and there. But you know how they are.”

“Their form of helping is basically watching and directing someone else,” Logan replied and grinned.

“Ain’t that the truth,” Kendra laughed, her hand slipping into her brother’s and he gave her a reassuring squeeze. “Are youreally okay with this?”

“Listen, I support you no matter what. That’s never a question. Do I want you to be closer? Of course. But, you’re right. You have to do what’s best for you.”

Kendra nodded. “Thank you.”

“Always.”

“Ready to go back inside?”

“Of course I am. You said mango sticky rice, and you know that’s my weakness.”

She giggled. “I may have made your favorite for that exact reason.”

Logan narrowed his eyes as he stood. “Sneaky.”

Chapter 21

?Before they made it to the door, Logan turned to Kendra. “I just want to make sure that you’re leaving for the right reasonsand not just to get away from BJ.”

Kendra’s shoulders pushed back and she looked her brother in the eye. “I promise you that this is not to get away from him.I’m not gonna push it, and I’m not gonna ask for anything. Because, as you both acknowledged, he’s not ready. So, I’mma goand do me. This decision isn’t about anybody else.”

Logan nodded slowly. “Okay, I just wanted to make sure, because I know you’re focused on your dream, but I also know a partof you was holding out hope that things would work out.”

“True. And I don’t have any regrets. It’s just that I’m still processing, you know.”

“You’re disappointed. It’s okay.” Logan nodded.

“Yeah, I am. But I will be fine. And he will be fine. And, hopefully, when he is ready, he finds what he’s looking for.”

“And, hopefully, you find what you’re looking for too. All I know is that they better treat you right, so I don’t have tokill them,” Logan deadpanned.

“Okay, well, let’s not go in that direction. We don’t needMy Brother the Serial Killerto be the next title of a documentary.”

Logan laughed. “There are moments where I have that protective instinct. I can’t help it.”

“No, you definitely do have that instinct. And for certain people, I think I do too, but we’re not going to kill anyone anytimesoon.”

“Fine, take all the fun out of it,” Logan sighed. If he’d had his way, Chase would have been the first one to go. Luckily, all of that was happening right as he and Shonda got engaged, so he had other more important things to focus on.

As they stepped back into her apartment, Lani and Shonda were sitting on the sofa gabbing away. BJ stood near the entrancechatting with Stanley, his drink getting low.

“Can I pour you another?” Kendra pointed to his glass.
