The sisters turned around but didn’t seem to recognize her.
“We’re with the theater group,” she explained. “We just saw your audition. It was great!”
The sisters perked up.
“Did we get the role?” Hope asked.
“Yes,” Keisha confirmed. “You nailed it!”
The sisters smiled at each other.
“When do we start?” Faith asked.
“Next week,” Keisha answered. “We’ll have a production meeting then and you’ll be part of it. I’m the choreographer, so we’ll be working close together.”
“And I’m in charge of wardrobe,” Mindy added. “I’ll make sure you both look beautiful on stage!”
Faith looked her over and didn’t seem entirely convinced.
“Sounds fun,” Hope said.
“Yeah.” Mindy felt her smile evaporate. “Hey, did I see you talking to Troy Mitchell a second ago?” When the sisters nodded, she continued. “I know he can seem nice, but he’s actually a creep. Trust me.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Faith asked.
“That he can’t take ‘no’ for an answer,” Mindy explained. “I went on a date with him. It didn’t end well.”
Faith laughed. “Oh, you’rethatgirl. He told me about you.”
Mindy blanched. “He did?”
“Yes, and I won’t have the same problem, because I’m mature enough to handle such things.”
“Hey, I’m mature!” Mindy protested.
“Then you should mind your own business,” Faith replied. And with that, she turned and walked away.
Mindy stared after her in shock.
“See you next week,” Hope said sheepishly before following her sister.
“Yeah,” Mindy managed to reply. She turned to Keisha. “What the hell?”
Keisha grimaced. “Hey, at least you tried.”
“I wish I hadn’t,” Mindy said, glancing in their direction. Then, at the top of her lungs, she shouted, “What did he say about me?”
“No,” Keisha said, leading her away. “I get it, but that’s not going to help. You know what will?”
“An extra-large portion of french fries?” Mindy suggested.
“You’ve got it,” Keisha said. “And once we’ve gorged ourselves silly, we’re going to have a serious talk about you getting on stage.”
“What?!” she cried, already feeling sweaty.
“I mean it. Iknowyou’ve got moves. We have way more Sharks than Jets, and in a town this white, we need every dancer we can get.”
Mindy laughed. “No way.”
