He laughed again, looking out the window. “Believe me, it’d be better if you didn’t know.”

Lynn told herself that she didn’t want to know. “All right.”

“Your retirement has been much more interesting than mine. Maybe you could take me to another gallery?”

She bit her lip. She knew that she should say no. She knew that it’d be smarter to tell him that, while it was nice seeing him, she was busy. Or she should agree that they should meet again, but then never go through with it.

She could leave this restaurant, senses intact, and go back to her life, the good life that she’d built – full of art and watching the birds that came to the feeder and sunsets on the water…

He spoke again, a glint in his eye. “For old time’s sake?”

Lynn smiled. It was too late. She could see the signs, but it was the same as with any other disaster – she was powerless to stop it. Her only chance was to run away.

Yet the riptide had already formed around him, threatening to drag her out and away from the shore…

Lynn knew that it had been her choice to get in the water in the first place. And she wasn’t ready to get out.

“Sure,” she said with a shrug. “Why not?”
