“Right, because he’s deaf.”
A laugh sputtered out of Lynn and she shook her head. There was no use in trying to get him to be serious.
The rest of the meal was pleasant, and Mike expertly avoided any other topics regarding his ongoing investigation or his mortality.
Instead, he told her about a number of the undercover assignments that he’d done during his time at the Bureau. All of them had been declassified, and he was excited to share some of the more harrowing tales.
Perhaps Lynn was wrong about her lone wolf theory? It was possible that Mike was different. Maybe he didn’t need other people. It seemed all he needed was himself.
He was quite capable, and Lynn was impressed with him, as always. But she couldn’t help but wonder – was he so different? Did he really need no one but himself?
Could he ever need someone like her?
