Mike shook his hand and introduced himself as Gary Bomba.

“I didn’t know that Lenny was bringing a friend today.” John said with a cool smile. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“Gary’s been helping me,” Lenny said. “I know him from the old days.”

John smiled but made no further comment. Lenny sent Mike to wait outside while they discussed business. Mike did as he was told, dealing with the uncomfortable feeling of the hairs standing up on the back of his neck.

Benzini wasn’t someone to mess around with. His instincts were screaming it. Yet here he was.

As he stood there, he tried to memorize the face of every person that he saw in the office. No one looked familiar, and there was no one important as far as he could tell.

After half an hour, Lenny emerged from the conference room and told Mike that he had to fly back to New York City.

“I’m guessing you can’t go back there,” Lenny said.

“You’re guessing right.”

Lenny shrugged. “Well, you can drive me to the airport then. I’ll be back in a week, but until then, lay low.”

“No problem,” Mike said.

It would be a relief to have some time away from Lenny. He felt like he hadn’t made any real progress, except for being “allowed” to tag along with Lenny.

That was enough for now, though. A break would be a perfect chance to allow him to gather his thoughts and plan his next steps.

And, though he knew he shouldn’t, he wanted to pop in to see Lynn, too.
