But a moment later, Jill burst into a laugh, her first of the entire meeting. “You think I’m scary?”

Rose let out a breath. She was delighted, just like she hoped she’d be. “Yes. Even in your messages to some of these guys, you have a side of aggression.”

“I’m not aggressive. I’mdirect.”

“When they don’t know you, it’s aggressive, especially coming from someone as successful and beautiful as you are,” Rose said firmly.

Jill seemed to think on this, and she smiled. “Okay, Rose. Don’t flatter me.”

“I’m not flattering you. Not really. I’m trying to understand you. Who you are, what you need, why you need me.”

She nodded. “Can you find me a match, then?”

“I can, but you have to trust me.”

“Fine.”

“And you have to be nice to him. Your match.”

She groaned. “My sister is always saying that to me. But I am nice! What else am I supposed to do, roll out a red carpet for these guys?”

Rose laughed. “I just mean, just give the guy a chance. A real one. Go on a few dates, and don’t interrogate him.”

“Nice is overrated,” Jill grumbled.

“You’re an extremely impressive person,” Rose said, pulling up Jill’s SerenadeMe profile and scrolling through the pictures. “I’m going to match you with someone who is not impressed by you. At all.”

Jill laughed. “Okay.”

“You’re probably not going to like him at first.”

“Because you’re going to match me with a loser?”

“There, right there,” Rose said, pointing. “That’s not nice.”

She crossed her arms. “Fine. Why won’t I like him?”

“Because I’m going to pick someone who will challenge you, and not in a business way. I’m guessing you’re not used to that.”

She uncrossed her arms, a bemused smile on her face. “Okay, matchmaker. Do your thing.”

Chapter Fifteen

As much as she would’ve preferred staying in the cozy comfort of her bed, Lillian had to get up early that Sunday morning and get dressed for an aerial silks class.

It was all Lucy’s doing. She’d gotten a deal on tickets and insisted on dragging both Rose and Lillian down – or was it up? – with her.

“We’re allowed to just watch, right?” Rose asked, taking a bite of toast.

Lucy dumped a cup of frozen strawberries into the blender and answered without looking up. “No.”

“Nice try,” Lillian said under her breath. “We’re going to be spinning around like spiders in a web.”

“More like trapped flies,” Rose whispered.

They both laughed and were soon drowned out by the blender going off. A minute later, Lucy slid each of them a glass of her famous strawberry protein shake.

“Drink up. You’re going to need this to help your weak arms.”
