“Where did she take him?” Mick asked and the twins, satisfied their half-brother and their mother were okay, got back to playing their video game.
“They stopped at this trailer on Crissen Street.”
“Crissen?” Mick was floored. “What the fuck are they doing over there?”
“Nikki was there. She and some guy came out, she hugged him, and then she drove away. Then Teddy and Mrs. Sinatra got out and went inside. They’re still inside, sir.”
Mick was livid. “I’m on my way,” he said and ended the call.
“Ma okay?” Jackie yelled after him, but he didn’t bother to answer. He angrily hurried around that foyer and out of that front door.
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Teddy didn’t push it. He was going to let it play out organically. And for the longest time no words were spoken. But Juda Gavin knew he couldn’t stall forever. He knew Teddy’s patience would run out and he would force him to talk. “I don’t know her,” he said. “You ask me how I know your wife? I don’t,” he lied.
“You said she hired you to do a job. Why? If she doesn’t know you.”
“I know a guy that knows a guy that knows her. He gave her my name. She wanted me to do a job and I did it. That’s why we hugged because she was grateful it got handled.”
Roz looked at Teddy. Teddy frowned. “What got handled?”
“This guy had been stalking her.”
Teddy and Roz both responded in unison. “Stalking her?”
“That’s why she wrecked her car last night. She was being chased by his crazy ass and she lost control. But I took care of him.”
“Why would you need to take care of him?” Roz asked. “Teddy could have handled that.”
It didn’t make sense to Teddy either, but he let it ride. “Who was this stalker? And how did he know my wife?”
“She was out with her girlfriends last night and some rich white boy saw her at the club. What I heard was that she didn’t want to get you involved because she didn’t want any heat on you, and she didn’t want any heat on herself if she handled it. SoI took care of it for her. She came by to pay me for my services and she was so happy she hugged me.”
“You took him out?” Teddy asked.
“He took himself out. As soon as I went to confront him, he started shooting at me. So I shot back. It was self-defense.”
“Yeah it always is,” said a doubtful Teddy. “What was his name?”
“Luther Brisby. Some farmer from Alabama or somewhere who saw what he wanted and decided she wanted him too. Delusional as fuck.”
Roz looked at Teddy. Was he buying that bullshit?
“How much did she pay you?” Teddy asked Juda.
“That’s between her and me.”
Teddy quickly grabbed the man and slammed him against the back of that sofa.
“Ten grand,” the man said quickly. “Ten grand dammit!”
Teddy calmed back down. “And that was that?”
“And that was that, yes sir.”
Teddy didn’t know what to make of him. He had a connection to Nikki alright, but what was that connection? A friend of a friend? No way. But he wasn’t getting the answer from that guy, and he knew it. “You know who I am?”
“Hell yeah I know you. You’re Teddy T. I know who you are.”
