“They wanted to be together, but Pepper was just a late night. When Taco Shell found out that she was pregnant, it was too late for an abortion. When she got a job opportunity over there, she took it, and he followed.” Mauri paused to take a bite of the fried chicken in her hand.
Galiana chuckled. “It’s a damn shame that you got everyone calling that girl Taco Shell. That is not that ho’s name.”
I waved her off. “Girl, fuck that ho’s name. She’s lucky I’m not calling herthat bitch. Taco Shell is close enough.”
Taelyn laughed before she told me that I was hell. That I am.I was a whole lot of hell with sprinkles of heaven mixed in.
Mauri just shook her head. She continued her nonchalant explanation about James and Taco Shell wanting to live a free life without being weighed down by a child. Mauri also said that she had certified papers sent to Taco Shell’s mother, signing over her rights. “Even though her parents are fuck asses, I want the baby girl to have a good life. I made sure to put her on as an active employee at a company over there, if anyone came lookinglater. The company doesn’t see her name, but if someone comes looking, they will.”
She’d thought of everything. I loved Mauri because her ass was so unserious about most things in life. That was the Virgo in both of us. The only difference was that she was a September Virgo. I was an August Virgo, and most of September Virgos made me cringe. I didn’t give a fuck what I said or did, but I did think about it on some occasions. Those other muthafuckas didn’t think about a damn thing when it came to dealing with people who needed to be dealt with.
“Damn, I guess that’s good. I can’t stand TorTela, but I know that she will take care of Pepper. When she found out that she was going to be a grandmother, she went into go mode immediately.” I chuckled when I thought about it. “Hell, so did my mom, but we see what happened with that.”
Fiona smacked my hand. “Nope, we’re not going to do that. You act like the doctor told you that you were barren. He didn’t tell you nothing like that. The likelihood of you conceiving and carrying a baby to full term is extremely high.” Her eyes softened with a glimmer in them. “I’m so sorry you had to experience that; however, God does everything for a reason.
“God knew that wasn’t the man that he had for you. I don’t believe that God causes the bad things to happen in life. I do believe that certain things he chooses not to block because he has a bigger play for you. That failure, that hurt, that heartbreak that you experienced was to help you get in the position that you need to be for his glory.” She reached her hand out and grabbed mine. “I promise you that his glory is coming.”
Tonight, we were at Fiona’s house. We had an entire girls’ weekend and ended it here to wait for our men to get here from their weekend. We went to Miami while the men went to Vegas. I loved the relationship that I had developed with the women individually and as a group.
All our heads turned in the direction of the sound of sniffles. Soft ass Ruth had a tissue to her eyes, dabbing away tears. “Fiona, that was so beautiful. It’s so amazing what God can do when he places his people in the right spaces. I came into Mega’s life to bring him my love and the love of God. Mega and I have exposed you all to the love of our God, and he is working in all of you. Thank you, God.”
The room was dead silent outside of her continued sniffles. Shandeli’s body turned in the direction of her best friend before she leaned her forearms on her top thighs. “Ruth, did you just give Mega credit for God working through us? I want to make sure I understand so that I know what angle to curse you out from.”
“No!” Ruth’s finger went up. “I would never give anyone God’s glory. What I said was that it was God who positioned me into his life to show my husband God’s love. With that, God was able to show himself to all of you.” Her tone was serious. “I mean, Fiona just laid out a revelation that can’t be ignored, and she’s a retired killer.”
Now that was funny, and my laughter was the evidence of it. Everyone’s laughter joined mine like a well-practiced chorus. She really called Fiona a retired killer.
“What y’all got going on out here?” Croy came through the back door with a smile. When he saw his wife, it brightened. He beelined straight to her, sat down, and pulled her into him for a kiss.
All the men found their women to do the same. “Hey, baby,” T.J. greeted when he sat next to me. His lips kissed mine.I love his lips.
“Hey, baby. How was the trip?” I asked once our lips disconnected. His lineup was still fresh from his haircut before he left.
He leaned to the side and pulled something out of his pocket. I didn’t notice that it was a wad of money until it was in my face. “Ya man came up on thirteen bands.”
I took the wad from him and put it into my bra. “Thank you, boo. This can go toward my closing cost.”
“Croy, Ruth said that Mega was rubbing off on me. I said something that was profound that has a spiritual aspect, and now Mega is rubbing off on the retired killer,” Fiona said through her giggles. She told Croy the conversation when he asked.
Mega cleared his throat to draw our attention. “I’m sorry, but what is funny about me rubbing off on you? I am a mighty man of God with a walk realer than David’s, and God ain’t even through wit’ me yet. It’s a pure blessing for someone to say that I am rubbing off on them. Don’t try my God or me, Fiona.”
I couldn’t tell if he was truly offended or joking. You never knew with his ass, because his joking was serious, and his serious was serious. Croy sucked his teeth. “Shut the hell up.”
We all laughed when Mega told Croy to go to hell soaked in jet fuel. “Mekole, you said that money was going toward your closing cost. You found a house?” Mega shifted the topic with his question.
I smiled at the thought of my house. “Yes and no. I found the manufactured house that I want, but I have to find a lot to put it.” I shifted my body so that I could wrap my arms around my man. “T.J. and Casey . . .” I smiled in Casey’s direction. “They’re letting me purchase the model home’s furniture.”
Casey chuckled. “It’s not like I had a damn choice. That nigga would have flipped if I told his woman no.” He shook his head with a chuckle.
“Man, whatever. You act like we don’t sell the models with the furniture,” my baby fussed. “We do that shit all the damn time.”
Casey stared at him. “Tumnus, did we sell Mekole the model, or did she get a new unit, and you told her that she could have the furniture from the model when she asked us where we got it from?” His ear dropped toward his shoulder. “We have never done that shit, nigga.”
Pea laughed, then said, “The power of the pussy is majestic. You can’t really explain it unless you have one.” She saluted me. “Well done, sis.”
The other women saluted me as well before we all roared in laughter. For the next few hours, we all sat around to recap our weekends, eat, drink, and just chill. I loved it when I spent time with my girls, but I adored it when we all spent time as couples. There was a certain healing when you belonged to a safe community. Your friendship circle was your community. It was important to feel safe physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally when you were in your circle.
When Croy and Fiona got a little more handsy than anyone wanted to see, we all made our way out of their house. I sat on the passenger side of T.J.’s car, dozing off. I was exhausted. I must have fallen asleep, because I didn’t feel when he carried me into the house. The fact that he could carry my ass turned me on every time. I wasn’t a small female, but my man handled all of me with expertise.
