“You care about the baby more than you care about this shit,” he said with detest. He shook his head, then said, “Maybe if your pussy wasn’t broken, then that would be our baby.”

Faheeta jumped up. “Oh no the fuck you didn’t say that dumb shit.” She charged his ass, but her attack was thwarted when James pushed her on her ass. She jumped back up. “Bet that shit. I’m gonna have my cousins fuck your bitch ass up. You a ho ass nigga.”

His words hurt like hell. He’d confirmed the insecurity that I had about him blaming me. Although I was hurt, I would never wear that shit on my sleeve. At least not in front of him. He didn’t deserve my fucking emotions. I held my hand up. “Faheeta, he’s not even worth all of that shit.

“Perhaps God knew that you weren’t worth being a father, so unfortunately, my son had to suffer for it. It could have been his blessing in disguise.” The words tasted like acid leaving my mouth. That toxic trait of you go low, I go to the basement of hell came out full force.

“Bitch!” He rushed toward me. His hands shot up in the air. “Oh, shit.”

I let out an ominous laugh. “Now, I know you didn’t really think that would pan out. You should know me better than that,” I taunted. The barrel of my favorite Beretta was touching the tip of James’s nose. See, I kept a bang, bang on me at all times, even in my home. The way things were going in the world, you had to stay dangerous everywhere. “My daddy would be so disappointed in you.”

James’s fair skin was red. His eyes shot over to Faheeta when she told him that his ass was quiet now. “Fuck you,” he said toher. When he turned his attention back to me, his jaw clenched even more. “Fuck your daddy.”

My head bucked back, and I cocked my lil baby back. “I bet you won’t say that to him.” I took my phone out and told it to call my daddy.

He picked up on the second ring.“Hey, baby girl. You alright?”

“Yes, Daddy, I’m fine. I’m at home with Faheeta, my beautiful baby Pepper, and James. Me and Faheeta just came from brunch not too long ago,”I told him.

I could hear his smile through the phone.“Hey, Faheeta. You need to bring that pretty baby over here. Me and Brandy want to spend some time with her.”

“I will, Pop Derrick. I’m sure Mekole will have her next week when I’m away on my work trip. She’ll make sure she brings her over,”my best friend confirmed.

My eyes didn’t break from James’s hateful stare.“Daddy, I was calling you because James wanted to tell you something. Baby, go ahead.”

I held the phone close to his mouth so that he could speak. When my father asked him what’s up, he cleared his throat.“Mr. Derrick, hey. I wa-wanted to thank you for everything that you’ve done. You know, as a man, it was hard to lose my son, and I appreciate the long talk you had with me.”

That’s what the fuck I thought. He could talk all the shit he wanted to, but he knew my daddy didn’t play about me. My daddy would come over here and toss his ass in the air.“It’s not a problem. I can only imagine how you feel because I’ve never been through it. I’m here for you if you need me.”

“Yes, sir. Thank you,”James’s bitch ass said. I should smack his ass with my gun, but I would take the high road.

“Okay, Daddy. I love you. I’ll see you and Mommy tomorrow at dinner.”We spoke for a few more minutes before he disconnected the line.

My head shook side to side. “I was trying to be nice and allow you as much time as you needed to get your shit out of here. Here your stupid ass goes making dumb decisions. You have until five p.m. tomorrow to get your shit. Anything left after that will be destroyed. You can start now.” When he gawked at me like I was crazy, I said, “Chop, chop, nigga.”

He backed out of the room, then stormed upstairs. Faheeta burst into laughter. “Girl, you are hell! I really thought you were going to shoot his ass.”

“I thought about it, but I wouldn’t do that with my baby in here. Besides, if I did all of that, he might think that I cared more than I did.” I sat back down and got comfortable. I planned to sit here until that man got all his shit out of my house.

James was in and out of my house for over an hour and a half, putting things into his big boy truck. He should be able to get it all tonight since his truck was a twin cab and had a covered bed. Faheeta stayed while he packed his shit. Before he left, he told me he had everything that he wanted. Anything that he left, he instructed me to throw away. That wouldn’t be a problem at all.

“Are you alright, best friend?” Faheeta asked after his truck roared out of my driveway. “I know you hard as fuck, but what he said was fucked up. We can still go find him and fuck his ass up.”

“Yeah, it was hurtful, but I’m not going to give that dead situation any more energy.” I smacked the tear away that fell from my eye. “I have healing to do and money to make.”

A Very Short Time Later . . .

I kept myself busy with work. I was almost finished with a contract that I worked on that paid me ninety-six dollars an hour. Since I’d rather be at work than home, I worked all the overtime that they allowed me to. This site had some fine ass men, but because of James, construction workers turned me off. It hadn’t been that long since we broke up. I saw him a few days ago at a hangout spot that we both used to frequent. I smiled and waved, then went on about my damn business.

“Mekole, what you getting into tonight?” this dude named Sam asked as we walked toward our cars. We’d worked on a few jobs together, but I wasn’t interested. One, he was married. If you allowed him to tell it, he would say that he was separated. I learned early in adulthood that if you weren’t legally divorced, then you were married. Outside of that, he was cool.

I shrugged my shoulders. “I think I’m going to catch up on some reading. One of my favorite authors has been holding book three of this series hostage, so I’ve become a book stalker.” I laughed at the thought of how many times a day I typedQuasim IIIinto my e-reader, to see if it was available yet. “My goddaughter is out of town with her mother for the weekend since they extended her work trip. Her grandmother took her to her mother, so I can’t spend time with my little Pepper.”

He laughed. “You talk about that little girl like she’s yours. I know she’s loved.”

Just the thought of her made me smile. She grew more and more daily. “She is so loved.”

I told him when I got inside of my car that I would talk to him tomorrow. Just as I turned my car on, my phone dinged with a text. I rolled my eyes when I saw who it was. “Why the fuck is this bitch texting me?”
