Of course he knew the exact state of my bedroom.

“You two have seen each other this week?” asked Roman, looking between Will and I.

“We live in the same building,” Will bluffed. “Bumped into each other a few times waiting for the elevator. You know what it’s like.” His eyes signalled to me to join him in the lie.

“Yes, it’s nice to have someone to speak to and protect me from the smelly guy on the top floor,” I fibbed.

I could tell Bree didn’t quite believe what I was saying, but chose not to push it further.

“I’ll get us some drinks. Do you two want another one?” Roman gestured to the bottle that had a third left in it.

Bree nodded as I shook my head.

“Okay, I’ll have a small one. I guess I’ll be able to get some sleep on the plane.”

If I wasn’t mistaken, Will’s face fell.

“Got it. Back in a minute. Will, can you help?” Roman beckoned to his friend.

They walked over to the bar and I watched as Bree’s gaze followed Will.

“What?” she grumbled. “You said I could if he asked. And you’re going away tomorrow, so I’m going to need cheering up.”

I nodded. “That is what I said,” I replied tightly.

Bree’s eyes narrowed. “You like him. And the bullshit about bumping into each other at the elevator? You have been seeing him.”

It was the first time I’d lied to Bree about seeing a guy. Usually she knew everything: the whole year with Hugo, the guys from college, all of them. I don’t know why I’d kept Will a secret from her. I shrugged.

“Tomorrow, I’m going away with Hugo. I’ve made my choice.”

“You’re still going?” Will’s voice came from behind me.

I spun around, mortified he’d overheard. The look of disenchantment on his face was obvious.

“I mean, you were saying to me the other day you hadn’t heard from him with all the final details,” he said. “You know, when we were picking up our post.”

The fact he was still trying to cover up our trysts was endearing. He could have outed us. But he didn’t.

“Oh, Hugo’s confirmed everything,” I feigned knowledge. “He said it was special, so I know he’s taking me to London. Thanks for the advice on the best sushi restaurants to go to.”

Will’s eyes clouded over. “Good for you. I’m sure you’ll have a fantastic time.” Then he turned his back on me and started talking to Bree.

How dare she mention fucking sushi! That was our thing.

I was seething.

After the week we’d spent together, I thought she’d forget all about that loser.

But no.

Apparently London held more allure than I did. Actually, she might have had a point there.

We’d spent so much time together, talking, kissing… We were growing close and even though she was talking confidently about the details of the trip, I’d bet my last dollar she didn’t feel secure it was actually going to happen.
