Playingnice with Candace was doing my head in. Particularly after she decided we should go to the Blue Goose for coffee.Of all the places…

My head pounded, and it felt like something had died in my mouth. I really shouldn’t have finished Alex’s bottle of whisky last night. After a few hours of fitful sleep on the sofa, I headed up to the spare room and spent most of the rest of the night staring at the ceiling, hands linked behind my head. By the time I eventually drifted off, the weak sun filtered through the curtains.

Lennon still hadn’t responded to my messages.

I stood at the window, my gaze fixed on her house, hoping to catch a glimpse of her as she went to work.

My phone pinged.

Like an excited puppy, I dove to read the message, heart sinking at the words.

Candace: See you at 11am? We can grab a coffee, well, I won’t because it’s bad for the baby :) xxx

Justin: Sure. Where?

Candace: I hear the Blue Goose is nice… xxx

The pounding in my brain intensified.

Justin: Won’t it be busy?

Candace: Probably, but I’m sure we’ll get a table. Gotta go be sick again, laters xxx

Too much information.

How had I got myself into this situation?

Wearily, I plodded downstairs. Despite how little I wanted to do it, rocking up to meet Candace stinking like a brewery wouldn’t be a good thing. All my stuff was at Lennon’s. I hoped Amber was around and could tell me where the spare key was.

Luckily, it looked like she was. She sat in the living room, watching a morning magazine TV show where there was an item on celebrity pregnancies.

Jesus, couldn’t I get away from the subject?

“I need a favour.” I stood in front of her and blocked her view of the screen.

“Ugh, you stink. How much did you drink last night?” She leaned to one side to try to peek at the picture.

Not enough.

“I need to get some things from Lennon’s. Is she there?”

At the mention of Lennon’s name, I elicited Amber’s full attention.

“She’s gone to work. The house is empty.”

“Have you got a key?”

She shook her head.

“Then? Help me out here, Amber. I don’t want to have to borrow Alex’s boxers again.”

Amber made a face. “Thanks for that visual. There’s a key under a flowerpot next to the kitchen door at the back.”

“Thank you.”

Without another word, I headed next door. I easily located the key and entered the house. It was eerily quiet and strange to be there alone.

I went upstairs to Lennon’s room—our room.
