Then, before I could stop myself, I dropped my head between my knees and vomited all over the pavement, before everything went black.

When Justin’sname came up on the screen, I stared at it like an idiot.

Could I speak to him now?

Lucas called me from the living room, telling me if I wanted any Chinese, I needed to get my arse in there pronto.

We were celebrating—sort of. I’d had a fantastic chat with the team at CompleteDiva and it all looked very promising. I’d been so surprised when they got back to me again so quickly and invited me in straight away. Perhaps it was an omen.

Old life versus new life.

By the time I’d decided, the call had already gone to voicemail. It was like karma chose for me. Moments later, I had a message.

He had finally got back to me.

I itched to know what he had said.

Lucas and the celebratory meal could wait a few minutes.

Once I’d finished listening to the message, I clapped my hand over my mouth and called Justin straight back. His words slurred, and he sounded like he’d been drinking or taken something or both.

The phone rang and rang and rang without being answered or going to voicemail.

He’d sounded desperate.

He’d sounded like he couldn’t go on.

Where the hell was he?

A cold hand clutched at my heart.

Frantically, I called Amber, while stuffing a bunch of clothes into a bag. I had to get to Ealynn Sands as soon as possible.

“Lennon! What’s up? Curtis and I are having dinner.”

“Where’s Justin?”

“Don’t know, Mum said he’d gone out for a walk earlier. Maybe about an hour or so ago, why?”

Briefly, I told her about the message he’d left and how worried I was. I could hear her relaying the conversation to Curtis as I spoke.

“Can you find him?” I asked. “Tell him I’m coming home.”

“Of course, I’ll call Alex as well. We’ll check out all the places he’d usually go.” Amber sucked in a breath. “Get here as soon as you can. Let me know if you need picking up.”

“I will. Thanks, Amber.” I ended the call and went into the living room where Lucas shoved another dim sum into his mouth.

“Sorry, I couldn’t wait,” he mumbled through a mouthful of chicken and prawn. He clocked my bag. “Where the hell are you going at this time of night?”

“I need to go back to Ealynn Sands. It’s Justin.” I hovered in the doorway. Lucas had been a fantastic support over the past few weeks, and I owed him a lot. “I don’t know when I’ll be back.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Do you want me to keep the room for you?”

“Please. I don’t know how this will pan out. Any of it.”
