Without him even having to make it clear, I knew who he was talking about. It wasn’t the first time he’d written a song for me. But in the new version of us, I didn’t know what to say. Sadie nudged me in the ribs.

“This is for you, isn’t it?”

Listening intently to the words, all I could do was nod. Jordan’s eyes never left mine as he sang, clasping the mic tightly between his hands, as if it was his lifesaver. Biting my lip, I fought back the tears threatening to overwhelm me.

Don’t break me, just rearrange me,

Took a broken soul,

And reshaped it to be whole,

The weight of history and expectation of what could be,

Makes little or no sense to me,

When we were meant to be.

At that moment, if I had any lingering doubts about whether getting back with Jordan was the right thing to do, his words told me it was. Everything I’d done for him on tour, getting him back on track, this was the culmination of those actions.

And I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.

CHAPTER23

Jordan

I watchedLex as closely as I could while I sang. A shy smile played on her lips, and I saw her swipe away tears at one point. My heart ached for her. Everything I said through the lyrics was everything I wanted to say to her in person every day. I counted myself lucky she had decided to come back to me.

As the last chords of the song died away, a huge round of applause took their place, whistles of approval splitting the air. Buoyed by the positive reaction, I nodded to Levi, who switched his guitar back to electric, and we kicked off the remaining songs in the set. We finished up with a couple of old tracks,Beautiful Lullabybeing the closer and ultimate crowd-pleaser.

Knowing we had the room for the rest of the night, we didn’t have to bother packing down the equipment straight after like we usually did. I had intended to make a beeline for Lex, to ask her how she felt, but the space she had occupied by the bar was conspicuously empty. Glancing around, I looked to see where she was, but I couldn’t find her.

“How could you do that to me?” A low voice came from behind me, and I spun around to find Lex. “Sadie put a lot of effort into this eye makeup.” Dark smudges ringed her eyes, but I found her more gorgeous because of it.

Not knowing how to respond with words, I pulled her towards me. Our lips crashed together, bodies clamouring to be as close as they could. My hand went to the small of her back, tugging her hips towards me, the cool silk slippery beneath my touch. Her tongue slid into my mouth, battling with mine as we kissed. Everyone else around us ceased to be as I lost myself in Lex.

“Ahem.” Levi’s voice broke the moment. “Sorry to be the mood killer, but you two should get a room. People are starting to stare.”

“Let them,” I rasped, although if I were to move away from Lex anytime soon, the rock-hard erection in my jeans would be the thing drawing attention.

As if sensing my situation, Lex turned around in my hold, so her arse was directly against me. That really didn’t do anything for lessening the predicament. I buried my face in her hair, breathing in the sweet scent of coconut; anything to try and divert things.

“Sorry, Levi. I couldn’t think of any other way to thank Jordan for his song.”

The corner of his mouth turned up. “Lex, that whole damn album is about you. All you have to do is listen to the words. It wasn’t justReshaped Soul.”

Lex jumped away from me, her gaze boring into my soul. “Seriously? The whole thing?”

Slowly, I nodded, half expecting her to walk away from me.

“Then you’ll have to play it to me again, so I can hear it properly.” She stepped closer, brushing her lips against my ear, and whispered, “I need to find Sadie. I get the feeling we might not be here much longer.”

Levi looked at me with a raised eyebrow once Lex had gone. “That went better than you thought?”

“Couldn’t have asked for more.” I gestured around the room. “It got a pretty decent reception from everyone here too. I already can’t wait to take it out on tour.”

“Kelvin’s going to flip when he hears the full thing.” We had already shared snippets with our manager and got positive noises. “Shame he couldn’t make it tonight.”

“Actually, I’m glad he’s not here. Because he’d want to spend time dissecting every little detail, and all I can think about is getting Lex out of here and back to the hotel.”
