“Now?” I look at her, shocked, before I jump out of bed. I know her due date was yesterday, but it still takes me by surprise. “Okay, we’ve got this. You’ve got this,” I run a hand through my hair and try to focus. “How are you feeling? Do you need anything?”
“I’m good,” she laughs. “The contractions are coming regularly, but they aren’t bad yet.”
I throw on some boxers before grabbing a pair of pants and a t-shirt. “Okay, that’s good,” I nod my head. We’ve been doing birthing classes, so I know a little about what to expect. “How far apart?”
“Five minutes. They’ve been waking me up for the past two hours.” I see that she’s already dressed in leggings and a tank top that stretches across her swollen belly. Her hair is up in a cute, messy bun, and she’s wearing her glasses that I love so much.
“Two hours? Why didn’t you wake me?”
“I wanted to make sure they weren’t false. No sense in both of us up until I knew for sure.” She shrugs her shoulders and grabs the bag we have prepared by the bed.
“Here, let me get that. You should be resting.” I sling the bag over my shoulder. “I’m going to call Jake to come over to watchRyland. I’m pretty sure he’s the one on standby tonight. You sit and rest while I load the car.” I bend down and kiss her softly.
“We get to meet our baby today.” She beams up at me, and my heart flips at the sight. “Are you ready for this?”
Any anxiety I had vanishes when I think about being a dad again. Excitement flows through me that we get to be together this time. “I’m more than ready,” I grin back at her. “I’ll be right back. Don’t move,” I point my finger at her so she listens. “I want to help you down the stairs.” She salutes me, and I laugh.
“I love you,” she calls after me.
I stop at the doorway and turn to look back. “I love you. It’s forever, remember?” I meet her blue eyes shining bright with love.
“Forever,” she smiles, and I wink at her before running down the stairs. I can’t help the grin that spreads across my face. I’m going to be a dad again.
I stare at my son, wrapped tightly in a blanket in my arms.
Mason Maddox Montgomery.
Eve surprised me with his middle name, and I still have to blink back tears when I think about it. It was my last name before I was adopted and became a Montgomery. I loved my family and wanted more than anything to share the same name with my brothers as I got older. When I was officially adopted, I felt like I truly was a Montgomery. I felt like I belonged. To know that my son will carry it on for me, gives me peace that I didn’t know I needed. I feel that peace now as I hold him in my arms, knowing my parents brought him to me just like they did Eve and Ryland.
I’m mesmerized as I stare at his sleeping face. His blue knit hat seems so big on his tiny head. I can see the black hair sticking out on the side and smile when I remember how we felt gettingour first glimpse of him. He has a head full of black hair and the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen.
His small fingers wrap around mine as I walk quietly around the room. I glance at Eve sleeping peacefully in the bed. My heart is so full of love right now that I don’t know how it holds it all. She’s the strongest person I know and did so amazing today.
“You have the most beautiful momma in the whole world,” I whisper to him. “I fell in love with her the moment I saw her, just like I did with you.” He smiles in his sleep, and I kiss his soft forehead. “I promise to fill your life with so much love just like your momma does for me. I’m going to love you…forever.”
