“I’m right here.I can hear every word you say.”I pretended to look hurt, tamping down a twinge of jealousy at the sight of Janet joking with another man.“I was being a hero, rescuing a damsel in distress.”

“Of course you’re a hero.”She grinned.“But I kind of like you as a live hero, so you’re going to do exactly what Dr.Samson here tells you, okay?”

I sighed theatrically.“Okay, fine.”

The doctor ignored the byplay, addressing Janet.“I’m going to have some antibiotics and some more painkiller added to the IV.He’ll probably be pretty groggy for the rest of the night.Unless complications set in, I’ll sign his discharge papers in the morning and he can go home. He’ll need to take it easy for a few weeks and go to his regular doctor to check on it and get the stitches out.”

“Sounds good.Thanks.”

“No problem. You need anything else, you know where to find me.”He turned and left the room.

Janet approached the bed and leaned over to kiss me on the lips.I brought my hand up to cup the back of her head, sliding my tongue along her lips to coax them open. The sound of someone clearing their throat interrupted us.

Janet straightened up and turned.A stern looking woman in scrubs bustled in, pushing a cart in front of her.

“And you are?”I’d never been known for my tact.

“I’m the nurse who’s going to spike that drippy thing for you.”She raised one brow.“I’d ask if you were okay with that, but I follow the doctor’s orders, not the patient’s.”

Janet reached over and picked up the two vials sitting on the cart, reading the labels. She reached for my hand.“You need these, and you need some rest.I’m on shift shortly, so I need to get ready.I’ll check in on you on my break.”She dropped a disappointingly chaste kiss on my lips and headed out of the room.

The nurse fussed with the IV for a few minutes, adding the contents of the vials. When she was satisfied with the setup, she packed everything on her cart and glared down at me.“Not sure what’s going on between you and that girl, but she’s one of the good ones.Be nice to her.”With that she swept out of the room.

I stared at the empty doorway.I was getting the feeling everyone thought Janet was too good for me.

Maybe they were right.

Chapter Five

Janet

The move from the hospital to the clubhouse went as well as could be expected.Thor was grumpy and impatient. You would think an ex-SEAL would be good at following orders, but I guess that only applied to orders from people he considered his superiors.Doctors did not fall into that category.Sophia gave me a sympathetic look as I explained to him for the umpteenth time that he could not ride his bike for the next two weeks.

“I wasn’t going to race it, just a leisurely ride.I’ve been cooped up in that fucking hospital.I need to get the stink of disinfectant out of my head.”

I glared at him.“You’ll survive for a few more days.If you rip those stitches out, you’ll be right back there.”

Beast grinned from across the room.“Listen to your nursemaid, Thor.”

I threw up my hands in exasperation.“I’m not his nursemaid!”

Sophia reached out and tugged my hand.“You need a break from old grumpy there. How about we leave the guys alone while we go get a real cup of coffee.I’m not sure what that stuff in the hospital was, but it wasn’t coffee.”

“I’m just trying to keep him alive,” I grumbled, but I let her lead me out of the room.

The kitchen was empty. It was farmer’s market day in town, and Mom liked to go pick up local produce and meat for the clubhouse.Of course, Jake went with her. Those two were practically attached at the hip.If you found one, the other was close by.I had a feeling the Riptide boys were better fed than most bikers.

Sophia crossed to the coffee pot and poured the steaming liquid into two mugs.Carrying them over to the table, she pointed at the seat with her chin.“Sit down and have a coffee.Surviving on the crap they serve at the hospital is likely half your problem.”

“The other half is back there trying to convince people he didn’t almost die.”I dumped some cream and sugar into the mug and stirred it a little harder than necessary.

Sophia narrowed her eyes.“Deuce says Shadow couldn’t find anything online to suggest this was a deliberate attack on Thor.”

I took a sip of the coffee. She was right. This was heavenly compared to the crap at the emergency ward.Even the coffee in the staff room was barely mediocre.“It sure smacked of an ambush.”

“Yes, it did.”She pursed her lips.“I’m guessing this must have occurred to you already.Any chance your family found out you were dating a biker and decided to take care of the problem?I know they’re fixated on marrying you off to that senator’s son.”

I shook my head.“I already checked with Montgomery. He said the family had nothing to do with it.”
