“Mi nuh know... maybe not cause she would tell you,” he says. I close my eyes, trying to calm myself.

“You good?” he asks and I nod.

“I-I am okay,” I say opening my eyes.

He moves away fixing his clothes while I do the same. I look at myself in the mirror and my hair is a mess.

“Shit!” I gasp.

“Stop overthinking just fix your hair,” he says in a solemn tone.

Why is he so serious? My eyes finds my hair again and the condition of it makes me uneasy. “I don’t have a comb!” I whisper yell. He sighs. With a fork gesture, I run my hand through my hair, smoothing the parts that are sticking up then I turn to him. He’s fixing his GG belt with emotionless eyes set on the mirror. He looks so serious... seriously handsome. I can’t help myself.

“Looks better?” my voice comes out soft. He looks at me with his dark brown eyes focused on my hair.

He nods. “Mhmmm a little,” he jokes and I smack him.

This is all so funny to him. All of a sudden huh? “You did this,” I complain, rubbing my hair.

He laughs. “It good now.”

I smile. “Good.”

He pulls the door. “Come on,” I shake my head no.

“You go out first I’ll come out after,” I say and he looks at me with a straight face.

“Come out and nuh bother with the foolishness ... wah yah hide?” he asks.

I look at him with pleading eyes. “Please... it’s awkward,” I say, looking at him. He glares at me. “It’s awkward,” I repeat.

“Nobody d’evu a look over here,” he says, sounding annoyed and I walk out. I realize that the house is even more packed. Nobody nuh member COVID and nobody nah watch the bathroom fi real. Nobody nah pay wi no mind. Thank God.

“Gavin?” I call and he looks away from his phone. He gives me a knowing look.

Ugh! Except Gavin.

“Dino nyam yuh food... him seh yuh play with food too much,” Gavin tells me and I laugh.

“Him love fi thief people foo-” I’m interrupted.

“A mi pitney that?” I hear my mother’s voice. I gasp and snap around. My smile grows. Whatttt!?

“Yessss!” I squeal and dash into her arms.

She tries to lift me but her eyes widen at my weight, sending us both tumbling to the floor. Laughter erupts around us. Nickoi is already inching away. Everyone rushes to help, but quickly realizes we’re just rolling around, giggling like kids.

“Mommy!!!! Mi miss you enuh!” We hug each other tight, lost in our own little world.

“How the hell yuh get so fat gyal?!” she slaps my ass. “Watch thick! How yuh batty fi bigger than fimme?!”

“I love you so much baby! I knew you missed me and that’s why I surprised you. Mi know you did think a just the barrel me a send but how mi fi deh a foreign when mi only Pitney a go graduate and your birthday a end a month! Zara talk to me nuh man!” My mother rocks me and I cry.

“I love you so much!” I smile, wiping my tears. I’m so happy!

“Awww this nice eeeh?” Aunt Olive says. From mi come mi nuh see her.

“A this family reunion bout!” Aunt Lucy claps.
