Her face is contorted in confusion. Dark brown eyes fixed on me. From she look pon yuh so a question she a go bombard yuh wid enuh.
“What’s happening?” she sounds scared.
“Nutt’n... mi just nuh wah you alone a shop,” I lie. She slowly gets out of the car. Her eyes still fixed on me. The look on her face tells me that she isn’t convinced but she nods.
She walks off but comes back and I wind down the window. “Nickoi..” she says giving me a look. Jah Jah. “You promised,” her voice softens. I know she’s talking about the promise we made.
“Mi a guh stay safe mon.” She shakes her head in disbelief before she walks around the front of the car, then to the supermarket until I no longer see her.
All a my dawg dem deh round Carlos a the underground, mi d’evu have
nobody fi keep an eye on her. And anytime mi have a bad feeling, sup’m a guh happ’m. Mi nah go panic though.
I don’t feel like Suzanne is the right person to call so I dial Juaqína instead. She answers on the first call. “Yes boss?”
“Weh yuh deh?” I ask her, tapping my fingers on the steering wheel.
“I’m at my mom,” she retorts. “What’s up?”
“Yuh deh a Spanish town?” I don’t know where her mom lives.
“Yea,” she answers. I feel relieved. I waste no time to tell her to keep an eye on Zara before telling her the supermarket I’m at.
“Alright mi nuh deh far,” I can already hear her walking.
“Just fawud mon,” I tell her and she says okay. After ten minutes of waiting, I see her black Audi pulling in.
She honks her horn, acknowledging me and I flash my light in response before I reverse the car. I drive back down the road and turn on the same lane and spot the silver Corolla. I don’t go too close to it. Instead I park behind a car at the edge of the street and push back my seat a little before I start watching. I see a tall man speaking on the phone but I notice that he keeps looking around. Him look like him a take order from somebody. I don’t normally get out of my car if I don’t know the block but I’m gonna do this because mi wah know who him be and why him a follow me. Pulling the pocket of my car, I grab my ski mask, pull it over my head, and take out my gun. I jump out, walk over to him, my gun pointing to his head. He’s startled.
“Hang up the phone,” I demand, my voice cold and ominous.
Good thing the place lonely. They might have camera but my face is covered. As for my car it’s parked at the edge of the lane so the chances of it being caught on a camera is thin. Mi doubt dem have camera tho.
He quickly hangs up the phone and raise his hands in surrender. “If yuh do nutt’n stupid a one yah go get in a yuh head,” I tell him and I mean it. “Weh yah follow mi fa?”
He starts trembling. “M-mi never a follow you,” I point the gun at an isolated area and he scurries there as quick as a wink. I stand close to him.
“Lie, start talk now,” I say in deadpan.
“A M-Malik s-send mi fi watch yuh,” he cries. Malik?
“Who name Malik?” I press the gun to his temple. The wasteman a lie. Mi nuh know nobody name so. “Yah lie,” I prod his head with the gun aggressively and his body dips. He throws his hand in the air to stop me.
“N-no fi real him say y-you h-have h-him g-irl,” I raise my brow. Oh, so a him did a call Zara?
“A him one?” I ask and he stays silent. Him a hide sup’m. “A him one!?” I lightly press on the trigger but not enough to blow his head off. He gulps.
“Carlos Junior,” he nervously says, surprising me. Carlos have a son? Ohh so a dem say dem a go kill me? Both have them likkle reason.
Haha. Arite then mi a go tek weh them messenger. I move to my car trunk with him. “Hop up in a it,” I instruct, watching my surroundings.
It’s a regular day in Spanish Town. Hot and busy. “M-mi have a d-daughter and a son plus one in a belly,” he cries.
I breathe out. “5... ” I start counting down. Anytime yuh start count down enuh. Hmph.
He hops up in the trunk and I give him a handcuff. I have a lot of them. “Cuff yuhself,” I instruct and he slowly cuff his hands as he cries.
“Mi nah kill yuh if yuh do the right... now shet up else yuh dead.” I tell him and he lays down and I slam the trunk, quickly getting in the drivers seat. I turn the car and drive out.
