“Did we?” I grin, even though I totally know what went down. I mean, Miss Ma’am was definitely busy last night!
“Wah?” I have a feeling he’s playing with me.
“We have sex?” I ask him. He shakes his head no confusing me.
“No sah,” he looks away.
“But mi feel sore,” I let out an uncertain giggle. Am I delusional or was I dreaming?
“A joke man,” then he sings, “Zara bad like gyal inna bluez,” and I burst out laughing.

When I turn back around, I squint at Nickoi, who looks a bit down, fidgeting with his keys. He was just all smiles. “A wah?” I say, echoing my confusion.
“Yuh never embarrass yuhself,” he reassures me. Mi know sup’m else a bother him. But why and why now? All of a sudden so?
“Yuh just get vex outta nowhere, a wah?” I pry, and he shakes his head with this strange smile. Even though he’s smiling, I can tell he’s bothered. Laad Jesus.

“Mi did drunk Nickoi,” I defend. Mi nuh have a clue wah mi say to him last night enuh.
“Mi father always seh when people drunk a them real self that enuh. So yuh see the things dem weh dem would a hide when them sober them talk it out when them in a da state deh,” he says in an unfamiliar tone, staring at me. He sounds hurt. A wah mi really seh to this man.

He gets up. “Lowe that.”
“Please tell me nuh,” I beg him and he hisses.
“Zara wah mi just seh?” He counters and I sigh, sitting at the edge of the bed looking at him.

“Cause it better if we leggo certain things,” he shrugs.
“Mi wah talk, so talk to me please,” I plead and he lets out a labored breath.

“Drugs, scamming and gangs,” I tell him. “And Nickoi, I know you are into that and it’s fine with me cause I love you for who you are mi nuh care wah kind of illegal stuff you do for a living cause I love you.”

“Because I just want to...” I was saying but I realize that there’s no point. “Okay I’m just so curious because I don’t want to lose you.”

“Okay, then I’ll give you space,” I throw my hands up in surrender. “Before we do that though, mi wah be clear about wah mi seh and fix it.”
“Yah, yuh seh if yuh find out mi a talk bout badness you a lef me,” I gasp once his words surfaced.
