Sweet Tea snorted.“You know what I think?”
“Enlighten me.”
“I think you love that man.And I think he’s about to ruin every good thing he ever had.”
My throat burned.“Then let him.”
“The truth is Ember’s my cousin. My double cousin, even.”
“How?”
“If you don’t know, count yourself privileged… I don’t want her to end up with Villain. No offense, but he’s an asshole.Don’t really want her with Rome either, but that boys got one foot out the door of Royal Road.”
“He just patched in?”
“But I can see it in his eyes.Villain though. He’s there for life.”
Sweet Tea left as quickly as she came.
I didn’t sleep.
I stared at the phone like it might ring.Like he’d call.Like he’d choose me.
But he didn’t.
And I realized something as the sun came up over my cheap blinds and washed the room in dull gold…
This wasn’t about waiting anymore.
It was about walking.
I wasn’t just someone’s maybe.I was someone’s mother.And I had a choice to make.
I got dressed.Clean jeans.Black tank top that hugged my belly just enough to remind me I had power in this body. That life grew here.
I pulled my hair back in a messy bun.Slid on lipstick.
And I drove to the clubhouse.
Not for him.
But for me.
Because if he wouldn’t choose?
I damn sure would.
Chapter 26
Ember
I stood outside the Royal Road, trying to breathe.
My hand was still trembling from meeting with Villain and Rachel.
I was pregnant.I still couldn’t believe it.And still no idea if the father was a man who just invited me to say he wanted both women or the one marching toward me now with fire in his eyes and his fists clenched.
Rome.
