“Okay.”

“What about Sam?”

My eyes shoot open as ice runs through my veins. How does he know about Sam? I think back to our conversations and come up with nothing. I’m not surprised that he knows. He seems to know a lot about me that I didn’t tell him.

“What about him?” I ask, trying to sound nonchalant.

“Is he out of the picture?”

“Mostly…”

“What does that mean?” His tone is stiff, like he’s trying to keep his anger in check. It’s cute.

“It means that we aren’t dating any longer. I broke it off with him weeks ago, but we are still friends. Sort of. We aren’t really close, but we talk.”

“Meaning, you broke up with him and he’s still in love with you and probably up your ass to get back together.”

Wow. He hit the nail right on the head.

“Not quite?”

“Bullshit.” I say nothing to that. “Sailor, if you want to be with Sam, or anyone else, you need to tell me right now. This is getting… to be a lot more than I thought it would be. You’re making me fucking crazy in the best and worst possible way. I cannot handle you being with anyone else. If anything changes with you, you have to tell me.”

“Nothing will change,” I say, shaking my head even though he can’t see me.

“But if it does?”

“Then I’ll tell you.”

“Good. Now enjoy your bath. Get something to eat. I’ll talk to you later.”

We end the call, and I put my phone back on the table. I stay in the tub until the water goes cold. I get out, make myself something to eat, then get comfortable on the couch and do homework.

Chapter Forty-Four

Him

I push through the crowd of people to get to the kitchen where all the alcohol is. I haven’t felt this good in a long fucking time, and the only thing that can make it better is a buzz. A fight nearly breaks out between two guys as I make myself a drink, then move back through the crowd to find Colton. He said he’d be here, just not sure what time.

I find him outside by the pool, lounging in a chair, passing a joint to a guy I don’t know.

“What’s up?” I say, dropping into the chair on the other side of Colt.

“Glad you made it, bro. You want some?” Colton offers me the joint and I take it, inhaling deeply and passing it back as I hold the smoke in my lungs. I blow it out slowly, already feeling lighter in my head.

Music starts up, blasting through huge speakers set up all over the patio.

“You staying for the wet T-shirt contest?” Colton asks just loud enough for me to hear, passing me the joint again.

“When is it?” I ask before taking a hit.

“Twelve-ish.”

I shrug, handing him the joint. “Probably not. I gotta go see my girl.”

“Oh, you got a girl, huh?”

I grin, blowing out the smoke.
