“What did you do now?” Dustin answered with an agitated sigh.
“This time, it wasn’t me. It’s my wife. I’ll owe you a favor if you can handle this.”
“If?” He laughed as if I were joking. “There’s no‘if’with what I’m capable of, Dallas. Always remember that… Stall them. I’ll make a call.”
There was never any need for details with Dustin. He always seems to know exactly what the issue was and how to rectify it. I’ve never thought to question his source of information, and if I wanted to take Bria home tonight, I wouldn’t fucking dare.
As Dustin hung up our call, I saw the officers just as they pulled Bria into a room at the end of the long hall.
Without a second to spare, I pocketed my phone and charged straight for the door. Wanting nothing more that to kill every fucker that so much as touched her.
I forced my way through the door, finding my wife positioned in a chair with her arms behind her back. Two officers stood lessthan a foot away from her, while the other three conversed in the back corner of the room.
“Sir. You can’t—”
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing with my wife?” I barked, shooting both officers menacing glares as I stormed toward them. “Uncuff her right fucking now.”
“I’m afraid we can’t do that. Yourwifeis being arrested for murder. In case you weren’t present when her rights were read.” The youngest of the five stepped forward, crossing his arms over his chest—cock-of-the-fucking-walk.
I glanced down at his badge, registering his name as oddly familiar. But given the current situation, I couldn’t place where I had heard it off the top of my head—Officer Travis.
With his special forces-branded patch, I glimpsed his first name embroidered across the shield, and that was when I remembered exactly who this motherfucker was.Evan Travis.
Dustin had recently discussed the possibility of planting someone within state and local law enforcement as another resource for intelligence and eyes on the city.
“I was there, and your accusations are bullshit—” I took another step toward Bria and was abruptly cut off as the officer closest to her side stepped in front of me.
As my jaw tightened at the motion, a growl rumbled from deep within my throat, and I chewed on my inner cheek, ready to turn him inside out—maim the fucker that prevented me from gettingnear whats mine.
“Take another step, and you’ll be under arrest for obstruction of justice.”
“Fuck you and your justice. You don’t even know the true meaning of the word.” I spat back at Travis before snapping my gaze to my sweet girl. “Get up, Bria. We’re leaving.”
My wife stood firmly without hesitation, a smug grin still residing on her face, as I wrapped my hand around her bicep, guiding her around the officer who had initially blocked me and into my chest.
“You—” Travis started before he was interrupted by his phone, pulling it out of his pocket and giving us his back before gesturing at the other officers to watch us while he took the call.
“Are you okay?” I mumbled against her hair, my hands sliding down her arms to where her wrists were still cuffed, noticing that they had already turned red and irritated from the strain.
The longer I stood in that room, around those fucking men, the more enraged I became.
Bria nodded before burying her face into my chest with a long sigh of relief, and I wrapped my arms tightly around her, refusing to loosen my hold.
Travis turned on his heel to face us again, and I could see the anger and rage he was trying his hardest to conceal.
Dustin coming in fucking clutch—pulling his strings like a puppet master and handing my wife her ticket to fucking freedom.
“Remove the cuffs…” He reluctantly growled, his jaw ticking as he replaced his phone and glared at the black ring on my finger. “Miss Robins is free to go. We’redone here.”
Officer Travis stormed past us, his shoulder aggressively slamming into mine as he stopped for a brief second and shot me a malicious look out of the corner of his eye.
“You and Dustin better fucking watch yourselves. The leash only extends so fucking far.” He threatened in a malicious whisper before continuing his exit.
The rest of the officers followed Travis out of the room while the last released my wife from the cuffs and, without an additional word, left just as swiftly.
Bria instinctively wrapped her arms around my waist as we stood there for a few more seconds.Thank fucking god.
“Dallas, I can explain…” She uttered against my chest before pulling back to look up at me with justifiable means written across her face.
