I will the thoughts away, distracting myself by grabbing the throw off the couch where I’d left it folded earlier. I unfold it and drape it over him, being careful that the sudden pressure doesn’t wake him.
Satisfied that he’s covered and won’t get cold, I move away from him. I don’t trust myself to not run my hands through his hair. I just know it will be silky to the touch and I won’t want to stop. I head into the bathroom and splash some cold water on my face. I won’t go back to sleep now, not after that dream, but I pat my face dry and decide to lay in bed even if it means staring at the ceiling.
I’m nearly back into it when his voice cuts into the silence and scares the living daylights out of me.
“You’re up.”
His voice is deep, sleepy, and fucking sexy, but I don’t have time to enjoy it as I press into the wall with my hand clutched to my heart, which is trying its best to beat right out of my chest.
“Fuckme, Blaze! You scared the shit out of me!” I whisper-shout.
His sleepy chuckle makes goosebumps break out over my skin.
“Sorry, love.”
He goes to move but I cut him off. “No, it’s okay, don’t get up. I’m fine. I just wasn’t expecting you to wake up. Oh, did I disturb you? Fuck, I’m sorry! I tried to be quiet and not disturb you but clearly, I was loud. Was it the blanket, when I put it on you? No probably the tap run-”
“Take a breath, Davina. You didn’t wake me, but if you want me to get back to sleep, get your ass back into bed before you make me come over there and put you in it,again. Unless you’re hungry?”
I follow his instructions, breathing deeply and once I trust my legs to hold me up, I climb back into bed and ignore his offer to put me in it, pulling my covers over myself. I’m hungry but can’t be bothered to eat now and have to brush my teeth again.
You could eat something else that doesn’t require brushing your teeth, but you will certainly gag.
“I’m not hungry. Good night, Blaze.”
The words come out in a rush as I shut down the direction of my thoughts.
“Good night Mea Divina.”
I smile at the nickname, glad he’s no longer cutting himself off like he’d started to earlier today. Even though I have yet to discover how he knows that nickname, I can’t help but enjoy the comfort it brings hearing it again after all these years.
“Thank you,” I whisper.
“For what?”
“For the food,” I say. “For coming back.”
I add the last part under my breath.
“Always, love.”
Somehow, I managed to fall back asleep after climbing into bed. Having spoken to Blaze before getting back in made me completely forget about my dream. I wake refreshed and I’m surprised when I check my alarm clock to see it’s eight in the morning. It’s been a long time since I’ve slept in this late, but my body must have needed it.
Soft light still fills the room from the lamp I left on, though the shutters and curtains are still blocking all the daylight from the room. I brush my hair from my face, the strands all over the place from sleeping, trying to tame it. Giving up, I roll straight out of bed.
I stretch my whole body until I’m on tiptoes, my bones clicking and crunching with the movement. I make a squeaking sound as I do, enjoying the stretch. The t-shirt I’d thrown on last night rises and cool air touches the exposed skin left by the gap between the hem and my shorts.
“Well, what a lovely view to see first thing in the morning.”
The smooth timbre of Blaze’s voice fills the room and I drop my arms, spinning from the windows and facing him. I grip the hem of my top as I pull it down, making sure my stomach is no longer on show.
“No need to cover yourself for me, love.”
A flirty grin pulls at his lips. He’s standing in the bathroom doorway, lit by the light coming from behind him, his delicious forearm pressing into the frame. I take in his relaxed position and notice he’s not wearing a shirt.
Fucking hell.
I can see every hard muscle on his upper body, the hard cut of his pecs and tight abs, decorated with intricate tattoos that have rivulets of water running down them. He’s clearly just showered and come out with nothing but a pair of sweats on.
