Interesting, this just got a little bit easier.

They aren’t suspicious, simply annoyed which means they won’t be prepared. They both step into the clearing, Davina no longer directly in the path of the open gate but hidden behind a tree.

I’m behind them and before they can speak again, I have them both sprawled on the ground and out for the count. We tie them up and hide them behind a large fallen tree. They won’t be out long, but there’s no way for them to get free after I remove their weapons. It gives us an exit if everything goes wrong.

Don’t dwell on that possibility. This has to go according to plan.

“Let’s go,” I command.

My gun is drawn and raised in front of me, Davina sticking tight to my back as we stalk through the gate and onto the grounds. The camera feed is still looping and keeping our entrance quiet as we move to the guard house. I pop the door open with slow movements, thankful that it makes no sound should an unexpected guard be waiting for us on the other side. I sneak my gun in through the gap and sweep the room from the space between the doors.

I snort at myself at how cliché this is, like I’m in some dumb mob movie. Hopefully, it ends in a happy ending rather than a complete bloodbath as they usually do, but only time will tell. Regardless, Davina will be walking away unscathed from this. I’ll die before I let anything happen to her.

We enter the empty room and I shut the door behind Davina. The room is equipped with monitors showing all the feeds on the property. I watch them and pick Anthony Elodie out. He’s sat in the sunroom again, briefing his men on something.

It’s exactly what we banked on. His ego is so big he hasn’t bothered to place guards at any of the rooms in the house except the entrances and exits of the grounds.

Foolish prick.

“They’re stationed where we anticipated. We get in, set up our backup plan, and then we head to the devil’s lair.”

Davina nods, her face serious as she waits for me to uncover the steps leading to the underground tunnel that leads into thehouse. She’d been surprised at all the secret tunnels when going through the blueprints. She had been so scared of her dad after that first incident she would rarely leave her room.

This one is hidden behind a shelving unit that houses torches, holsters, and other gear. The solid back frame stops people from seeing what’s behind. It swings open silently with the push of a hidden button, which I found years ago when I snuck in here while her father was away.

I sweep the staircase, motioning for Davina to stay close to my back as we descend. There is soft emergency lighting every few paces here, disappearing around a bend as the tunnel curves back towards the main house, giving us just enough light to see. The door behind clicks back into place, sealing us in. We move forward, both of us as silent as we can be to avoid any detection should someone randomly appear. We pause for a few seconds in each pocket of darkness to ensure we are alone, and I check the cameras at intervals to ensure we are safe.

It takes us some time to get to the other end and I’m thankful neither of us is claustrophobic, otherwise this would have been impossible. I can feel the weight of the earth above us pressing down on the tunnel. Davina’s hand is on my shoulder as we navigate through to ensure we don’t split up and I can still get her behind me if someone should come from either end. She tightens her grip and I interpret it as relief that we can now see the door on the other side. She could also be nervous, considering where it opens out.

Her father’s office.

This end should have been trickier to get into as it requires a code, but the disgusting fucker made it all too easy to guess the passcode. It’s the date he killed our mothers. I punch the code in harder than necessary, my fury spiking that he’d stoop so low and degrade the two women in our lives who were like sunlight personified.

The door opens on quiet hinges, like it had at the other end. Davina slips her hand into my free one and squeezes in a show of support. I squeeze back and we enter the room, my gun at the ready, only to find it empty.

We make quick work of locating the hard drive he’d hidden with all his dirty secrets on it. I slip it into Davina’s hand and she lifts her top to tuck it deep into her bra. I’m so fucking thankful there are no cameras in here—I’d gouge anyone’s eyes out if they got a glimpse of the utter perfection of her body.

My eyes don’t leave her, even as she pulls her top down and tucks it back in. I swallow roughly, pissed that we have to do this instead of being in bed and exploring every inch of each other’s bodies.

She smiles at me and winks.

I chuckle softly at her and we both share a look before I indicate with a tilt of my head for us to get back to the task. The bag I had slung over my shoulders is lowered to the desk and I get to work setting the small packs of explosives I brought with me. The ones for the office are set so I place the bag over my shoulder once again, heading to the office door. The explosives are controlled through my phone and another device carried by Davina, giving us time to carry out our plan and get far enough away that we aren’t caught in the crossfire, or detonate the bombs if one of us is caught.

I pull out my phone and check the feeds. The hallways are still empty and there’s no sign of staff anywhere. I load my hacking app and punch in some codes, the door lock opening with a snick. I pocket it and turn the handle, eyeing the hall from the small gap I’ve opened so I can do a quick sweep.

All clear. We move throughout the house on silent feet, targeting all the rooms we picked out for the explosives to be placed. The pool, the garage, the kitchen, the hall, the lounge, the cinema room, the dining room. All leading us toward the sunroom.

I ditch the duffle bag with the last of the explosives, hidden somewhere it won’t be found when this place gets swarmed by the authorities. We move on through the long hall toward the double doors, toward the mausoleum which holds the remains of our loving mothers.

The last time we did this was for a dinner that didn’t happen, but the rage I had felt then is nothing close to how I feel right now. But this time, I won’t let it distract me. I will sharpen it into the blade it is. And when I strike, I will be aiming to kill.

Chapter 29

The Truth is Always Worse

Davina

My heart pounds in my chest, thundering like the hooves of a hundred galloping horses.
