He might be hotter than hell itself—and the first person to stick up for me so visibly inside these miserable walls—but that doesn’t mean I feel safe around him. For all I know, he’s trying to gain my trust just to pull the rug out from under me later.

It’s happened before.

No, don’t think about Tom.

I close the lid on my thoughts and with another breath, I try focusing on my senses. But all that does is make me hyper-aware of Blaze, only one step in front of me. His scent fills my lungs with each slow breath in. Amber, sandalwood, and a hint of coffee. Warmth.

I listen to his sure steps, noticing that he’s surprisingly light on his feet for someone with so much muscle. The rhythm of his gait creates a soft lullaby to accompany us as we reach the hall leading to my room. There’s nothing I can do to change the inevitable, so I take a final cleansing breath and square my shoulders as we fast approach my door. As we near it, Blaze raises his right hand like he is ready to high-five someone and whispers a command. “Stop.”

I’ve been around enough bodyguards and watched enough TV to know that hand gestures like that are used when in a dangerous situation where speaking aloud is risky. I immediately halt my steps and wait. Blaze turns his head to peer at me over his shoulder, his expression pleased that I followed his command. My stomach flips as warmth spreads through me that I’ve made him happy.

“I need to sweep the room first, wait here please, Davina.”

He speaks low and quiet, his voice is a soft caress on my skin. It’s the first time anyone working for my father has said please. Such a simple phrase that makes the biggest difference to a woman like me. I’ve been told what to do all my life, with the expectation that I’ll just follow orders with no trouble. And like a good little girl, I always do.

“Please, this place is locked down tighter than Fort Knox. Ain’t nobody getting in this house, let aloneherroom. All you’ll find in there are boring romance books and vials of tears from all the moping she does.”

Noel snorts at his attempt at a joke. I show no reaction to his snide comments, but he isn’t exactly wrong. I risk a glance at Blaze’s face, only to find him facing me entirely, close enough for me to lay my hand flat on that sculpted chest of his if I dared. I have to tip my head back to be able to see his expression is murderous and pinned to Noel behind me.

“Thefuckdid you just say?”

His voice is lethal in the quiet hallway. Every part of his body is rigid, coiled and ready to strike. Even though my body is screaming at me to run away from the threat, heat pools in my lower belly, reacting to the way he’s defending me. His warmth and smell are an intoxicating mix, and the urge to touch him is near painful to suppress.

“Oh, knock it off will ya? You think you’re the first newbie around here who takes his job so seriously and act like he gives a shit about her?”

I turn a little so I can see how irate Noel is. If his shrill tone wasn’t enough to give him away, him pointing a bony finger toward me certainly is. But again, I can’t disagree with his comments.

“You’ll see soon enough who she truly is. Don’t say I didn’t warn you,” he continues, huffing as he crosses his arms. Blazesteps forward, his chest now an inch from mine. His warmth envelopes me, warming my bones, and my blood.

“I don’t give a flyingfuckwhat you and the rest of the goons working for Mr. Elodie think. Be disrespectful to the lady one more fucking time and I’ll tear you apartlimb from fucking limb, you snivelly cunt.”

Well fuck, that escalated quickly.

Blaze tries to move around me, to put himself between me and Noel. Call it instinct, but I know if I let it happen, Noel will be a bag of broken bones and Blaze will be fired immediately. I shouldn’t care, shouldn’t give a fuck about anything that happens to my father's employees since they never care about me. Plus, I hate confrontation, given I’ve been on the end of enough of it. But I can’t stop myself from wanting to protect Blaze. There’s something about him that draws me in as much as it makes me want to run.

Before I even have a chance to think it through, I step to his side and place my hands gently on his rock-hard pecs. I won’t be able to shove him back—he’s basically carved from granite, all six feet of him, but I can make him pause long enough to not make a stupid decision.

An image of my hands splayed across his chest as I hold on while riding him cowgirl style, his thick cock pumping inside me, flashes through my mind. My lace panties grow soaked as goosebumps break out once again on my sensitised skin.

Reign in the fantasies Davina! Now isnotthe time.

“Don’t, Blaze. He’s not worth losing your job over.”

My voice is a little breathy from the images my brain is conjuring. I look up at him only to find he’s already looking at me, his emerald eyes glittering with rage, the muscles in his jaw ticking. I don’t look away, holding his gaze and willing him to calm down. I can only hope he isn’t pissed off at me for touchinghim. Each breath causes my fingers to move with the motion of his ribs, his pecs flexing underneath my touch.

After what seems like an age, he nods at me and pins his glare on Noel. I slide my hands from his chest and move back to his side so I can see them both but be able to step in between them should it come to it.

I hope it doesn’t come to it. I only have so much bravery in me.

“Today’s your lucky day,Noel,” Blaze grits out, “Thank the lady for stopping me from doing permanent damage to you and apologise to her for being a prick.”

He crosses his arms over his broad chest, and I watch the movement. His tan forearms are covered in tattoos that I want to explore. I tear my gaze from them and focus on anything but him.

“Are you serious?” Noel asks, eyes flicking between the two of us.

“Deadly.”Blaze shoots back.

An exasperated huff leaves Noel as he stomps his foot pathetically like the man-child he is, before turning back to me. I bite the inside of my cheek to stop the laugh threatening to bubble out of me.
