Black dots took over Luna’s vision. Fear still trampled her, clutching her throat in its terrifying grip.

“Breathe normally!” Bastille shook her, demanding it.

As she fainted, he grabbed her just in time to prevent her from falling to the floor.

Chapter 6

“Do you know her or something?” Nikolai asked Kobe a few minutes after Bastille glared at everyone and carried the passed-out woman out of the living room.

Kobe stared at where Bastille had disappeared from sight with her. “No. Never met her before.”But she’s my goddamn mate, he thought to himself. Wolves could identify their life-long mate through smell. Though he could not tell what creature she was, he knew she was not human.

The scent of her produced an instant reaction. She smelled like home. She feltright. But for some reason, hehad not felt right toher. His mate’s reaction to him had been blood-curdling terror. Why?

Even now, he ached to follow where Bastille took his woman.

“Why would she react like that?” he muttered.

“She is a very confusing creature so far,” Nikolai replied.

“And hilarious,” Sly added.

“Where did you find her?”

“Outside the Dragon’s swanky hotel. She was carrying a briefcase of cash.”

Sly shrugged. “Once we get answers, I’m sure Bastille will let her go and you won’t have to worry about women fainting over your hideousness ever again.” He elbowed Kobe and headed toward the kitchen.

Hideousness? Kobe was far from hideous. Though, he did have a scar that ran from near his nose through his bottom lip. Could she have feared how he looked? No. It was his touch that triggered something.

Will my mate ever want me?

Kobe was painfully familiar with rejection. Abandonment. His family, his pack, had left him behind when he was not yet ten years old. They simply…forgot about him.

His entire life, he had prayed to the moon to give him a mate to love and cherish.

She is mine, and she fears me.

“Will never leave me,” Kobe growled.

Nikolai’s eyebrows quirked, and Sly popped his head back into the living room in curiosity. “What are you saying, big guy?”

“She sleeps in my room tonight and every night after.”

Sly blinked slowly. “Dude, do you have selective memory loss? First off, I already called dibs on her—”

Nikolai frowned. “When did you—?”

Sly continued, “Secondly, your presence frightened the girl so bad, it knocked her out cold. You think she’d sleep in your room?”

“I will show her she has nothing to fear.” Protect. Cherish.I will show her I can do such. Mates were sacred to werewolves. They were like a full moon, calling them, drawing them near. Granting strength. He would die before hurting her. He would dieforher.

“Blanket!” Bastille’s panicked demand cut through the rooms of the cabin.

The men hustled to him.

Bastille had just been trying to wake her. Water did that for many sleepers. After he sat her limp body onto a plush chair, he grabbed a water bottle and splashed it over her face.

No reaction. From her face at least.
