“We can’t just leave her here alone,” Sly shot back.
Nikolai shook his head. “She won’t wake for several more hours. The vampire transition can sometimes take a full day; she might be asleep until tomorrow morning. She’ll be fine here.”
“Not. Leaving. Her,” Kobe repeated.
Nikolai threw his hands up in the air in frustration. “We have toallshow our faces, Kobe. Otherwise, he’ll know one of us is guarding her and that we still have her. They’ll never stop hunting us.”
Sly chewed the inside of his cheek but seemed reluctantly agreeable to the plan. Kobe and Bastille both gazed at Luna’s peaceful sleeping face, pained to leave her.
“It’s the only way we throw off the dragon,” Nikolai said. “He knows we have her. If we make him think we don’t, he’ll stop looking for us. If he keeps thinking we have his mate captive… Bas, it will start a war.”
Bastille cracked a knuckle. His eyebrows furrowed, but he eventually nodded. “We show our faces for half an hour, maximum.”
Nikolai nodded.
“If she wakes—”
“She won’t,” the vampire assured the others.
The king of the Dark Ones flashed one more look of longing at his mate before turning and grumbling, “Let’s get this over with.”
Luna awoke slowly, blinking and rubbing her eyes. Everything was so…bright. And loud. She threw the blanket over her head, burrowing under it to hide from the invasive sunlight that streamed through the window.
Wait a minute… Where was she?
She poked her head over the blanket again, taking in her surroundings. A fancy bedroom? Was she in a hotel? Had the dragon captured her?
She could not imagine her predators in a place like this.I used to clean places like this. She jumped from the bed and hastily closed the window curtains, blocking out that annoyingly bright sun. Why did her eyes feel so sensitive?
Her throat was burning, her stomach growling.Hungry. Need food. She glanced around and found a menu.Room service!
She called in an order of fries, grilled cheese, a milkshake, and more fries. Waiting for the food to come, she left the bedroom and walked into the living room of the large suite. The men were not there.
She frowned. Where had they gone?
Bathroom was empty. Kitchen was empty. Closet was empty.
They had left her there. All by herself. Hours after she had been kidnapped by Rohan?
Goddamn men. She wanted to kill them. For some reason, her emotions ran on overdrive. Her hurt feelings simply transformed into betrayed rage. She remembered Rohan’s death, but everything after that was a total blur in her memory.
Why would they leave me by myself in a hotel room?
Had they abandoned her here?
All alone.
She wrapped her arms around herself and shivered, feeling so damn cold. Why was she so cold? She pulled the sheet from the bed to wrap it around her shoulders, but she pulled so hard, the expensive fabric ripped. She stared at it in disbelief. She was not strong enough to rip a bedsheet. What the heck was happening?
She must have stood there confused for a while because there was a knock at the door. Her room service order.
Mmmm. Food. I’m starving.
She had just eaten a large breakfast hours before but for some reason she just…craved.
Hopefully, the milkshake soothes the fire in my throat.
“Thank you,” she told the worker with a smile as he wheeled in several silver platters.
