A surprised chuckle came from her as she shook her head, smiling softly at him.
His good-natured grin dropped from his face, leaving his expression more serious than she had ever seen on him. “That is a dangerous laugh you have,” he said softly.
“What makes it dangerous?”
“It sounds like…eternal happiness. Like church bells and childhood. Redemption and love.”
She blinked, not at all expecting words like that from the playful jokester.
He leaned over his knees, so his face was closer to hers from over the coffee table. “It’s dangerous because of the thoughts it makes a man think.”
Entranced by the beauty of his face, she mumbled, “What kind of thoughts?”
“Thoughts like murdering anyone for taking the smile off your face,” he replied evenly.
She swallowed again.Okay. She needed to remember this cheerful comic relief was still a predator unafraid of murder. Now, how to use him to escape…
“What if the others need you and you’re here?” she asked.
“There’s this thing called a cellphone, where all someone has to do is call—”
Shehmphed and focused back on her hot tea. The rising steam stroked her cheeks as she breathed in the fruit-scented herbs.
“I can’t wait to see how you try to escape while they’re gone,” Sly said through a naughty grin.
“I—I wasn’t going to try to escape again,” she replied.Damn it. Was she that easy to read?
“A lie,” the fox shifter pointed out.
She tsked and re-crossed her legs again. “You know, it’s rude to use your predator powers in front of a prey.”
His lopsided grin widened. “Oh, I do so apologize.”
“You’re forgiven.”
“So quickly?”
“I’m a very good-natured and trusting person.”
His chest rumbled with laughter. “Another lie.” He blew over his tea, momentarily stunning her with the lush curve of his pursed lips. “I think you want something from me.”
“What?”
“An ally,” he guessed. “Help escaping. Maybe my super sexy body.”
She snorted.
“Bastille said none of us can touch you,” he reminded her. “So, you should stop biting your lip as you look at me and clenching those thighs together to put subtle pressure on your aching clit.”
Shit. She shivered from a new wave of arousal crashing over her.
His blue eyes burned like little flames as he commented, “I am a great reader of people.”
“You ever try reading books instead?”
“You fascinate me,” Sly said, tilting his head and leaning closer as he perused her. “Prey are known for being the weaker species, being driven to submit to and fear predators.”
She sipped her tea, not caring now if it burned her tongue. She had a feeling injuring her tongue might be smart around such a wise fox.Give him no answers.
