Grace stuck her head through the door with a smile on her face. “I’m sorry to bother you, but I wanted to run to the store to pick up the items to make Sadie’s pie. Would it be okay if I borrowed your truck?”
“I can drive you,” I offered, and she shook her head softly.
“You’re working, and if I go alone, we’ll have more time together when you finish. I have GPS, so I’m fairly sure I won’t get lost.”
Standing from my chair, I walked to the door and stepped into the hallway with Grace. Brushing my hand down her cheek, I leaned over and kissed her, pouring love into the embrace. After reading how the cult treated and trained the young girls, I wanted her to know how much I cared and cherished her.
Without telling her, I was hoping to erase all the things she endured. Pulling back from the kiss, I looked down at her and winked.
“Wow,” she remarked, and I wiggled my eyebrows at her.
Linking our hands, I escorted her down the stairs and into the living room. My wallet was on the small table in the kitchen, and I reached inside, pulling out a hundred dollars and handing it to Grace. “Take this for what you need.” Then I handed her my credit card. “And use this for what you want.”
She shook her head and handed the card back to me. “I’ll take your money for the dessert, but I have no need for your credit card.”
“I know you don’t need it, but I want you to have it. Can you do that for me, Grace? Can you keep it, knowing it makes your old man feel better?” I wasn’t playing fair, but I wanted to take care of everything she needed or wanted.
“I don’t feel right taking your card, but if it makes you feel better, I’ll keep it. Even though I won’t need it.”
I brushed my lips against hers before whispering, “Thank you, baby.”
Walking into the garage, I took the keys to the truck off the hook by the door and helped her inside the vehicle. After making sure her seat and mirrors were set, I reminded her, “I’ll be here waiting for you to return.”
She bit her lip as the garage door opened from the remote in my hand. “Lucky me.”
Watching her pull away from my house, I walked inside and ran up the stairs to my office. Turning the monitors back on, I opened my laptop and activated the monitoring system for my truck. I wasn’t as bad as James by putting a mic in the truck, but I could see where it was on the map and had access to the cameras for the navigation system.
I could see every turn she made as she traversed the road into Portstill, and when I saw she was a few miles from town, I called Gunner.
“Hey, brother.”
“I need a prospect to follow Grace. She’s on the road leading to town going to the grocery, and I want to make sure she’s okay,” I remarked, and I heard him cover the phone.
“I’ve got Jackal already in town, so Claw sent him a message to keep an eye out for Grace,” Gunner replied, and I exhaled deeply. “Have you found anything?”
“Not yet, and I want to be finished for the day when she gets back.”
“Then I’ll let you get back to it. I’m here when you need me. We all are.” I could hear the worry in his voice, and I knew my brothers hoped this was the last job I took for Callahan.
They watched me slip further into the darkness the longer I worked for him but being connected to him has been beneficial to the club. Having Grace around, I no longer wanted to live in the craziness. Instead, I wanted to ride with my club and spend every free moment with Grace beside me.
Watching Devlin, James, and Hayden move on with their lives, even with the pain and trauma from the past, gave me hope that my future with Grace would be possible. I just wished I could keep her once the truth of our meeting came to light.
