I could hardly believe it. It was such a coincidence.
“It's Alice's birthday.”
She also turned her body, now facing me completely.
“Really?”
“Yes. In fact, the Harrises are having a party, and even though they obviously don’t like the idea, the lawyers must have advised them to invite me. It would be important if you went with me.”
“Important?”
The question seemed to serve to wake me up. I needed to stay focused.
“Yes. You know, we're engaged, it's good to see us together.”
I noticed the smile on her face tremble. Damn it, had I said something wrong?
“Oh... sure... of course I will.”
“Is everything really okay with you? I mean, it's your birthday, and you must have plans for that day.”
“I would definitely stay home, my grandmother would order a cake, and we would eat it while watching some shows, with Waffle. I think they would both understand if we leave these incredible plans for the next night.”
“Deal, then.”
“Deal.”
“And, if you want... you could accompany me to the hotel tomorrow, so we can try to investigate what happened that night.”
"I’d like that," she said, walking backward toward the elevator door, where she pressed the button to call it. "But tomorrow's a workday, I hope my absence won't be deducted."
"Never. You're the boss's fiancée."
"I'm starting to get a bad reputation, I think I'll get an even worse one after this."
"Is that a problem for you?"
She smiled and shrugged, answering as she stepped into the elevator. "It used to be. Now it's not anymore."
I stood there, watching her until the door closed completely.
When she was gone, the large room felt emptier than usual.
I guess I was already starting to like having that woman around too much.
Chapter Twenty-Two
MICHAEL
Suddenly, the idea of going back to the hotel seemed like a huge waste of time. Neither Camila nor I knew where to start our investigations, and we hadn't even talked about it before we got there.
We decided to start where it all began, retracing our steps that day. So, we first went to the lobby bar.
This time, however, we decided to order two Cokes. No alcohol, for our own safety. The last thing we needed was another drunken situation.
We were served by a woman, which led to my first observation.
“There was a guy serving us that day, wasn't there?”
