“What ifIwere a newisolated case?”
“Well... That would be a new isolated case twice, because it would be very unlikely for us to have a child without having had sex.”
She opened her mouth to retort, but no sound came out. The irritation on her face gave way to confusion.
“What do you mean by that?”
“That we kissed a lot and made out a bit, but... it didn't go beyond that.”
“But... We woke up in the same bed and... without clothes.”
"Because we still managed to take our clothes off before you passed out."
Her cheeks turned red.
"I passed out?"
"And I’d say it was kind of offensive of you to fall asleep before the sex, but truth is, I didn’t stay awake much longer either—I ended up crashing too."
"So... does that mean I’m still a virgin?"
Again, I couldn't help but smile. Not that it was funny, it was just... different.
And, why not say... adorable.
“Are you really still a virgin?”
“Well... That's none of your business!”
Furious, she finally got out of the car, slamming the door hard.
I stood there, watching as she walked up to the entrance of her building, unable to keep the silly smile off my face.
Chapter Twenty-Four
CAMILA
“And Camila is pure again. The world is spinning on its normal axis again!”
My friend was so funny...
I was already starting to regret telling her about my latest discoveries regarding my own virginity, which remained untouched.
It was Saturday, and the two of us were at the bookstore while my grandmother had gone out for lunch. I took advantage of the moment to talk about the secret only Evelyn knew. When my grandmother was around, though, the conversation shifted to a different topic: the plans for the bookstore’s expansion.
Once again, I had lied to my grandmother. I closed the purchase of the neighboring lot by paying the full amount upfront, as the owner had demanded. But I couldn't tell my grandmother I had come up with allthat money, so I lied, claiming I had taken out a loan and, together with the savings we already had, managed to make a deal with the owner—giving a down payment and agreeing to pay the rest in small installments that fit into my salary.
In truth, the debt was already completely paid off, and I even had some money left to start the renovation works. That filled me with hope and made me feel that agreeing to be part of that whole scheme had truly been worth it.
Actually, it wasn’t the only reason.
I was happy to help Michael fight for custody of his daughter.
And maybe, just maybe, I was also starting to really enjoy having him around.
“Next week is your birthday,” Evelyn said, bringing me back to reality. She was leaning on the counter, leafing through a book. It was a biography about the behind-the-scenes of Grey’s Anatomy, her favorite series. “Shall we book something?”
“I won't be able to. I already have a date with Michael.”
