Bear steps forward. “I’ll tail you. Just in case.”
“Appreciate it.”
I don’t wait for permission.
I head out, helmet in hand, fury vibrating in every step. If they so much as breathe near her window, I’ll put a bullet between Guardrail’s eyes myself. No one threatens my girl and walks away.
No one.
I burn rubber getting to the safehouse. By the time I pull up, Bear’s two blocks behind. I cut the engine and immediately scan the street, but nothing seems off. There are no unfamiliar cars, no signs of a tail.
But that doesn’t mean she’s safe.
I’m up the stairs in seconds, key already in hand. The door swings open before I can knock.
Willow’s standing there, barefoot, wearing a tight crop top and some leggings. Fuck, the sight of her steals my breath, even now.
I want her now, but her eyes are wide and filled with panic. She’s holding her phone like it’s a weapon.
I step in and shut the door behind me. “Show me.”
She hands over the phone.
You can’t hide forever, sweetheart.Nice place. Cozy. It would be a shame if something happened to it.
I clench my jaw so hard it aches. “Fucking bastards.”
“You think it’s them?” she whispers.
“I know it is.”
She wraps her arms around herself, shoulders tight with tension. “I didn’t even reply. I didn’t know if I should call you. I thought maybe I was overreacting—”
I grip her chin, tilt her face up to mine. “You did the right thing. Always call me. I don’t give a fuck if it’s three a.m. and you hear a floorboard creak. You tell me.”
Her lower lip trembles. “I’m scared.”
I pull her against my chest. “You should be.”
Her breath catches.
“But you don’t have to be scared alone anymore.”
She sinks into me, hands fisting the front of my cut. “What are we gonna do?”
“I’m gonna get you out of here,” I say. “They’ve made this place hot. If they know where you are, this safehouse isn’t safe anymore.”
“Where will we go?”
“My place. It’s off-grid. They won’t find us.”
She swallows. “What if they try?”
“Let them.” My voice turns to gravel. “I’ve been looking for an excuse.”
We leave within fifteen minutes.
Bear helps me sweep the perimeter, then peels off to watch the area for stragglers while I get her on the back of my bike. Her arms wrap tight around me, and I swear, every time she clings to me like that, it carves a mark into my chest.
