Ember
My heart is poundinga million beats per second as wetness and heat throb between my legs.
I can’t believe how much I’m turned on by the thought of sex with Axe, more turned on than I can begin to describe, even though he could be right. Our bodies might not be compatible. Then again…
“The other time I fed a vampire,” I tell him. “My body changed. I became stronger, I healed faster.”And silver and sunlight burned me.
“I think vampire venom gives me some of the powers of a vampire for a while, so I don’t think you’ll hurt me.”
I need to convince him to at least try to have sex with me. Because not only is my physical need strong, my affection for him has grown exponentially.
After hearing his story, I want to be close to him. I want to experience making love with him. To share everything with him. Every instinct tells me that it would be more intimate than what I experienced with Zuben.
“You are very brave.” He shakes his head. “But I can’t risk hurting you.” His muscles contract. His chest and then the hard ripples of his abs pulse in waves as if they’re all involved in holding him back from what he wants. What we both want.
“Please.” Looking into his eyes, I see his desire, recognizing it as vividly as my own. “I want to feel you inside me.”
“No.” He shakes his head, his body tensing even further. “I would tear you to shreds.”
“Tearing cunts to shreds is my department.” A voice smashes the shell of safety and intimacy around us.
Zuben is standing at the entrance to the cave, but it’s not him who spoke. It was the vampire called Psycho.
Leaving me in a flash, Axe lunges toward the pair, his body growing bigger and hairier before my eyes. But Zuben holds up his hands in surrender.
“Hey, big guy,” Zuben says. “We come in peace.”
With a roar that sounds excruciatingly painful, Axe transforms into a bear. Then he rises up onto his hind legs and roars again.
Psycho backs into the tunnel. “Fuck this,” he says. “I told you this beast was a killer. I got no plans to be his dinner.”
“Wait,” Zuben says to Psycho.
I pull the blanket tightly around me. Terrified, confused, shaking. Why would Zuben bring that monster in here?
“It is okay,” Zuben says to Axe, standing his ground and holding his palms toward him. “This vampire did not come here to hurt Ember. And if he tries, you will have to fight me for the privilege of killing him.”
Axe paces back and forth in front of the two vampires, snorting and huffing, the hair on his back rising in spikes.
“I would never allow anyone to hurt, Ember,” Zuben tells him. “Not ever. I would give my life for her.” His voice quivers slightly, and for a second he looks past Axe to make eye contact with me.
I feel the honesty in his voice, his intense concern for my life. Will Axe sense it too?
Zuben’s eyes widen. Is he asking for my help in calming Axe? I’m not sure I can move and don’t want to get any closer to Psycho.
Axe stops pacing, but stays on all fours, blocking the vampires’ paths.
Finding the ability and courage to move, I stand. Keeping the blanket around me, I walk slowly forward. Axe must sense my movement because he turns quickly, his eyes flashing like gold beacons in the dark cave, and then he rises up onto his hind legs again and roars at the vampires, keeping himself between them and me.
He drops back down just as I reach him, and I slide my hand into the fur on his shoulder, feeling the power of his body as it reacts to my touch.
“Why would you bring him here?” I ask Zuben. “You saw him threaten me. He did it again just now!” He made a crack about tearing up my cunt, like it was funny. I keep my eyes on Zuben, my hand on Axe, refusing to even look at Psycho.
From the tunnel, Psycho scoffs, like it’s some kind of joke.
Zuben glares at Psycho, and then turns back to Axel and me.
“This vampire,” Zuben says. “He has been captive down here the longest. He knows the tunnels inside and out. He knew them even before it was a prison. He may be our key to escape.”
