Pregnancy tests.

Finally, she found what she was looking for. She picked up the package and stared at the words on the front. Never in a million years did she think she’d be in this position with Foster, of all people.

“Oh. Hello,” a female voice said. “Tonya, right?”

Shit.

“Where’s Foster?” Kathy asked. “Why aren’t you with him?”

This was none of Kathy’s business and she certainly wasn’t going to discuss it with the likes of her. Part of Tonya could understand why Foster had been upset over her blubbering to Denise. Or to anyone for that matter.

However, it wasn’t like she’d confided in a stranger. At one point, he’d been close to Victoria’s parents and had he chosen to deal with his ex-wife differently, they still might be.

“I’ve got a question for you.” Tonya might as well go for broke. If Foster knew she was doing this, he’d really be pissed. “Why did you call Victoria’s parents?”

“I think the answer is obvious.”

“Actually, it’s not,” Foster’s voice startled Tonya.

She jumped, dropping the box that she’d been holding to the floor.

“In part because you lied to them.” Foster bent over, lifting the box into his hands and fiddling with it.

Tonya’s heart raced. Her eyes stayed focused on the words on the cardboard and their meaning.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Kathy dared to reach out and touch Foster’s bicep.

He recoiled.

Kathy scowled. “Victoria is dying, Foster. Her parents have the right to know that and be by her bedside.”

“No, actually, they don’t. They gave up that right a long time ago. What happens to Victoria is on me. The only person you should have called was me and you know that. But more importantly, you interfered in my relationship with them by lying. Why?”

“There’s no need to raise your voice with me,” Kathy said. “Let’s take this where we can talk privately.”

Foster looped his arm around Tonya’s waist. “Anything you have to say to me, you can say in front of my girlfriend.”

Kathy gave Tonya the once-over.

Tonya shivered.

“I’m sorry. I don’t see the attraction, but whatever.” Kathy shook her head. “Five minutes. Give me five minutes of your time. That’s all I ask.”

“Just say what’s on your mind.” Foster let out a long breath.

“All right, but for the record, I didn’t want to do this in front of anyone.” Kathy folded her arms across her middle. “Do you remember the night I called you from urgent care about three months after the fire?”

“Nope. We’re not doing this again, Kathy.” Foster shook his head. “You have tried to bring that up more than once. If it is true, then I’m sorry that happened to you, but that doesn’t tie us together. Not the way you would like it to. We’re over. Let it go.”

Kathy planted her hands on her hips. “You threw away the best thing that ever happened to you.”

“That would be Tonya, and I plan on making sure that doesn’t happen.”

“Well then, maybe you might want to talk her out of taking that pill.” Kathy waved her hand over her head and turned on her heel. “Or maybe you could break her heart and she’ll miscarry too.”

“What was she talking about?” Tonya swallowed. “She lost a baby? Your baby?”

“So she claims.”
