Fred nodded. “I wish you hadn’t simply because you know how I feel about having your DNA in the system, but I understand.”

Tamsyn stood. “May I be excused? I have streets to patrol.”

“I expect to see you for dinner tomorrow tonight and we’ll work through this.”

“I’ll be there.” She turned on her heel and double-timed it out the door.

“What the hell did he want?” Eddy Jenson, her partner, asked. He leaned against the wall not far from what they referred to as the bullpen, an open room where all the local cops shared desk space.

She might as well let the cat out of the bag herself. “I got a lecture about my new boyfriend.” She made her way to her desk and snagged the keys to the patrol vehicle. “Fred does not approve and Anna is fit to be tied.”

“Sweet Jesus. Who the hell are you dating? Someone in lockup?”

“Worse. Noir River.”

Eddy stopped dead in his tracks. “Wait one second. I’m sorry to be a dick, but I heard about a rumor back in the day—”

“Carter is not my father. Noir is not my half brother. I have the proof if you need to see it.”

Eddy laughed. “Oh, no. I believe you, but it’s all anyone is going to be able to think about.”

“I’m painfully aware.” She pushed open the back door, heading to the parking lot. “But you could help me by telling everyone who brings it up that it’s not true.”

“I’ve got your six,” Eddy said. “I knew Noir in high school. I mean, as anyone could know him. He pretty much only hung out with his twin. But I’ve had a few beers with him this past year. He seems like a cool guy.”

“Just misunderstood.” She yanked open the driver’s side door.

“Isn’t everyone in that family. I mean, come on. They have Weezer for a mother.”

“She’s actually a really nice woman, once you get to know her.”

Eddy slipped into the passenger seat. During the day shifts, they didn’t always go out in tandem, but at night, with the rash of crimes that had been happening in the next town over, Fred had decided he wanted two-man teams on the streets. That meant double shifts and overtime.

Tamsyn didn’t mind the hours or the extra cash. But there were some officers who had families and were already overworked.

Eddy wasn’t one of them.

“I’ve had my share of run-ins with the Weezer.” Eddy laughed as he buckled in. “I’ve always found if you’re not afraid and treat her with respect, she’s a pretty normal person, but I’d never want to be on her bad side.”

No truer words had ever been spoken.

“Let’s hope for a quiet night.”

CARTER

Carter stood at the window in the master bedroom. He stared at the rising sun as it peeked over the horizon, shedding light on the vineyard. He’d spent a lifetime protecting his wife. His family. He’d made hard choices that most people didn’t understand.

He’d changed his last name, taking his wife’s, so that his children would have the same name as their legacy. He’d taken hell for that one. People in the town believed his wife controlled his every move.

Not.

Although, everything he did was in part to save Weezer from herself. That woman could be the most stubborn human known to man.

But he loved her with every fiber of his being and would move heaven and earth to make sure she was happy and safe.

“Here you go, my love.” Weezer appeared in the bedroom with two mugs of coffee, handing him one. “Just the way you like it.”
