Alonzo is dead, Zanae, he’s dead, and your worst nightmare will be killed too.
The shadows engulfed me, trapping me in my own suffering. My breaths became shallow, and the distant screams in my mind grew louder, the demons refusing to release their grip.
I didn’t want to talk about what happened with Elijah because it meant discussing what was going on in my head, and the last thing I wanted was to acknowledge my real issues. I always fought alone, me against them.
I heard my name, heard someone’s voice, Elijah’s, asking me to open my eyes. His hand caressed my pulse, and I felt it, I felt him even when I was inside my head. He was touching me to pull me out of it, and it worked.
I opened my eyes to see green staring at me.
He was in front of me, and it was no one else.
Miranda and Niko were no longer there.
How long had I been stuck?
“Do you want to talk about it?” He asked, softly.
I shook my head, and he took me in his arms, my head found its way under his chin.
It’s him, it’s his smell, his hand that is touching me, him.
Calm down Z.
“We’re going to find them all, and I’m going to burn them alive, I promise.”
I looked at him, understanding that whatever is going on between us, he was going to be there, even if we had to hide, he was still going to be there at the end of the day.
I nodded and lifted my head up, not wanting to continue this conversation, I asked, “Where are Niko and Miranda?”
“I told Niko to take Miranda downstairs where her car was parked, and to leave us alone.”
My eyes locked with his, and gratitude washed over me.
“Thank you for never asking.”
“I want to kiss you when you look at me like that.”
A smile appeared on my lips and he understood.
He leaned in and kissed me gently, as if he was appreciating every corner of my lips, then he grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the balcony, and whispered, “Niko is coming back in a few minutes.”
I didn’t even have the time to say anything before his hands closed the distance between us and his lips crashed against mine, brutally and with so much need.
We heard the elevator coming up, but he didn’t stop.
“Elijah, Niko is coming—” I tried to speak. But he bit my lower lip and smirked against my mouth.
I heard the elevator doors, and he stopped just when Niko’s voice came through, “The boss is back.”
We were on the balcony, I was still thinking about that kiss and I couldn’t show how affected I was by this because Niko was telling us about how he hated having guards everywhere with him, and that he was going to follow Elijah’s path. Which is, in other words, threatening to kill them if they just don’t leave him alone.
Typical old rebellious teenagers if you ask me.
Nikolai wanted to ask about my scene earlier. I could see the question forming in his eyes, but he never pushed it. He let it slide, as if understanding that it was my own battle. That’s why I loved Niko. For the first time in my life, a man accepted my boundaries without ever asking any questions.
Green eyes found me again, worried, “It’s not safe for you out there, even the Lebanese’s complex, I don’t trust your father. After what happened yesterday, I can’t guarantee your safety when you’re not under my watch.”
I tilted my head, trying to understand where he was going with that, “Are you offering your protection services, Volkov? Should I start paying you for bodyguard duty?”
