My gaze remained fixed on my favorite human. “She can take care of herself. I’m just here to make sure no fucking unwanted sharks come her way.”

“Bodyguard duty then,” he paused and continued shaking his head, “No. More like a killer duty, or animalistic even. You’re practically fucking growling every time someone looks at her.”

A smile appeared on my lips as I watched the love of my life swimming and gazing at the sky. “Be the predator, not the prey, they said.”

He let out a small chuckle before asking, “So, what did you do to Lukas that night?”

My eyes gleamed with a madness I buried deep down in me. “I cut his tongue and dick out and set him on fire, then watched him burn alive. I made sure he suffered for every fucking moment he threatened her.”

Niko, though familiar with the darker side of me, couldn’t help but jest. “You know,Caro, you’re a downright psycho. Setting people on fire? What’s next, an evil laugh?”

Niko had the habit of always letting an Italian world slip from his lips when he felt overwhelmed by something. He knew me, he knew what kind of things I did, on a daily basis. But he didn’t expect me to do this for a woman.

And she was my woman, so I would do anything for her.

My smile turned cold. “Maybe.”

A laugh escaped him, “Well, remind me not to get on your bad side Eli. I might wake up one day and find myself on freaking fire.”

I chuckled and looked back at Zanae, finding a piece of my happiness in the tranquility she was experiencing.

My love suffered so much.

“He told me about the night they took her. He fucking touched her, Niko. He deserved everything I did to him.”

Niko’s eyes became darker, “Do you think she’ll fully recover from this?”

“I’ll make sure of that.”

He looked back at me, grinning and shaking his head, “Leaving letters next to ashes and setting people on fire... You’re fucking insane, they chose the wrong woman to play with when they attacked Zanae.”

“She’s everything to me,” I admitted.

Niko simply nodded. Then, turning to me, his eyes reflecting an emotion I hadn’t seen for a long time, he said, “She’s like a sister to me. Whatever you plan, I’m in this with you. We’re going to bring them hell together.”

“I’m trying to arrange a meeting with Elias. We need information about her mother. Levi and Ben are negotiating with the Lebanese for that.”

“I’ll go back to Vesper before you two. I’ll talk to him.”

“No, Niko. I’ll do it.”

He looked back at me, and shook his head.

“Elijah, if we want to have information, we need him to stay alive. I’ll take care of that. And you take care of Zanae.”

A long sigh escaped my lips. He was right. I would kill him. “Let’s do that.”

Zanae emerged from the water, her silhouette glistening from the only light in the sky. The sea droplets adorned her skin like diamonds, and a real smile adorned her face, with sparkly eyes.

With every step, she made her way back to me. My arms open, waiting for her to settle in between them.

“Elijah, you’re getting soaked because of her hug. How romantic.”

I responded with a soft chuckle, “Even if it was blood, I wouldn’t turn down her hug.”

Niko, feigning disgust, shook his head, “You two are too much for me. Tonight, we’re going out. We’re going to drink, get wasted, and forget about everything.”

“Sounds like a plan.”
