This gaze— so sinful, so tempting. “I will eat you alive, Zanae.”

My tone turned sarcastic and soft, “Don’t say that, Elijah; you might break my poor, fragile heart.”

His hands rested on either side of him on the counter, his legs parted invitingly. I felt drawn to him. He was a deadly vice, knowing well how to attract my own demons.

“Already broken? I haven’t even shown you how I could devour you. I bet you taste delicious.”

I didn’t back up, even with that infuriating satisfaction on his face, “So, what’s the end, Elijah? What do you want from me?”

He leaned in, our faces inches apart, his lips brushing against my ear, erotically, sensually, sending shivers down my spine.

“To make that little part of me wanting to bend you over and fuck you disappear. Bruising that soft skin of yours with pain and trouble. Because I hate how much I’m drawn to someone like you.”

My heart stopped momentarily and screamed again.

I scoffed, ironically almost. “Good luck with that, Elijah.” Looking down, I noticed a bulge under his sweatpants. “Seems like you hate me a lot,” I continued, that twisted pride filling every one of my words.

Then I left him, hearing a wicked chuckle before heading back to my room.

Let the games continue.

ZANAE

The rest of the week passed, and Elijah was avoiding me. It wasn’t just a casual sidestep; I swear, it’s like he had a sixth sense for my presence.

He was actively dodging me, even during training sessions with Nikolai. It was weird, to say the least.

I couldn’t figure out why he was acting this way, but then again, this man was just a walking mystery for me.

Strangely enough, I found myself missing his cold presence. It was like a twisted part of me, that lonely desperate girl craved the life he brought into her world. Maybe it was just easier to focus on him than to deal with my own thoughts, especially on a day like today. My mind wasn’t entirely present during our daily training session.

When you’re mourning someone, your emotions can be all over the place depending on the day.

Today was her birthday, a day she won’t be celebrating, and I found myself attempting to step into her shoes, but it felt like grasping at smoke.

Stay strong Z. Stay Strong.

Easier said than done.

Nikolai took over as my trainer today. He walked around me, ducking and weaving with ease and comfort, that cocky grin always on his handsome face.

“Come on, Zanae, you’ve got to be faster than that. You’re not fighting your father; you’re fighting me.”

“You always bring up my father during training. Can’t we focus on me beating the shit out of you without mentioning that man?”

Niko chuckled, bringing his hands up in the air, “Alright, no more father talk. Let’s discuss something else. How’s Miranda doing? Haven’t seen her in a while.”

Miranda. The thought of her face brought a brief smile to my lips. “Oh, Nikolai, are you interested in my friend? I knew it!”

He playfully rolled his eyes, “Please, Zanae, I’m just a gentleman and a good guy.”

“Yeah, of course Niko. Such a gentleman.”

“Speaking of that, how are you holding up with Elijah? He’s been quite distant lately.”

I continued to trade punches with him, but my mind was full of that night in his house. “I think he’s trying to break a world record for avoiding me.”
