I get up and straighten out my files. “Don’t think you’re getting out of my bath and massage. I’m not only hungry, but I’m sore and tired too. Your massages always help me sleep.”
His laugh is full of seductive promise. “Don’t count on it this time, beauty. Now that we’re having sex again, touching you will have me wanting you that much more.”
A new week is upon me. Hunter’s gone, and it’s the first time we’ve been apart since we got back together. I can’t say I like it, but my therapist thinks it’ll be good for me.
In my last therapy appointment, she made it clear that she was concerned about me‘jumping’back into a relationship with him. Even though I see her point since I still care about Jami, Hunter has shown me he’s willing to do what it takes. That means so much to me.
Jami, on the other hand, has been buried in work, so I’ve had little interaction with him. But today’s different.
We’ve been in a meeting for the final stage of the launch. Jonah just told us we need to get the last pieces of the marketing and advertising together so I can hand it off to the sales team.
“Dori, once you figure out what needs to be done, don’t be afraid to delegate some of the tasks to Melanie. I think she’s ready to take on more responsibilities.” Jonah glances at his notebook.
“Sure thing.” I read over the list of items we’ve discussed.
I think Jonah’s trying to get Mel moreinvolved so he can spend more time with her. Since we’ve been back, she’s been blowing him off.
Due to my complete dedication to Hunter, I haven’t had the opportunity to have a thorough conversation with her, leaving me clueless about the details.
“I’ve got a call to be on in a few minutes with the sales team.” Jonah’s gaze slides between Jami and me. “You two can use the conference room to finish the tasks we discussed.”
“That will work.” I peek over at Jami.
His jaw is tight as he stares at me from across the table. Jonah gathers his stuff and leaves the room.
I pick up my laptop. “I’ll move over there so we can get this done today. You must be drowning in work.”
Jami keeps his eyes on me. “My team is busy, but I’m fine. I had a good two weeks of uninterrupted time to get everything done. At this point, I’m just making sure the bugs are taken care of.”
My insides tighten. I set my things down next to his, but he closes his computer and stands.
“Let’s go to lunch.” He gathers his belongings and starts to leave the room. “I’m hungry and we can do this there.”
“Jami, is lunch necessary?”
He stops at the door and glances back at me. “Yes. I’m hungry, and I’m not doing this here.”
His commanding tone tells me I won’t win this debate. I relent and agree to meet him in the lobby after I get my jacket. He’s scrolling through his phone when I get off the elevator and join him.
I stroll up to him, keeping my tone even. “This was your idea, so you get to pick the restaurant.”
“I’ve already decided.” He flashes me a wicked smile as he slides his phone in his pocket.
My core reverberates with nerves. If I didn’t know better, that expression oozes confrontation, but I don’t know why.
He opens the door that leads outside and ushers me out. “Where’s your henchman?”
“I told Hunter to call him off. You know that type of hovering drives me crazy.”
“And Hunter was okay with that?” Jami glances around our surroundings.
“Yes, but I don’t want to discuss that.” I try to calm my pounding heart and say what I’ve wanted to for the last week. “Do you think we can be friends again? I hate fighting with you.”
“Let’s talk about this once we get to the restaurant.”
He guides me down the street as we briefly discuss work. I’m not paying attention to where he’s taking me until we reach the front door.
He opens it for me. “Ladies first.”
