“I love that, Jami. It’s a beautiful sentiment.” She shifts so she can kiss me.
My heart doubles in size as my love for her fills me up. There’s nothing like being with your soulmate and best friend. I’m whole with her in my life.
She pulls away from my lips and stares deep into my eyes. “You make all my dreams come true, and I promise to do the same for you.”
“You already have.”
“There’s nothing else you want? Nothing else I can give you to show you how much I love and appreciate you?”
My mind instantly hooks on to having a baby with her. All my fleeting thoughts about it anchor themselves to me. Having a child with her is like a deep-rooted need I can’t break free from.
I don’t want to ruin the moment with a discussion about it because I don’t think she’s ready for it. She’s still dealing with Aiden and finding a job. My desires can be addressed when she’s more settled.
“Jami, what was that look for?”
“I was thinking about your question.”
“And?”
“It reminded me we haven’t talked about how it went with Aiden.”
She moves so she’s facing me. “It went well. He agreed to help me find Sasha and to follow the rest of the terms in the contract.”
“That’s great news. So where did you leave it?”
“We need some time. I want to see he’s working on being a better man, and he needs it so he can get used to the idea of me being with you.”
My insides twist, so I shift to get comfortable. “And if he doesn’t?”
She sighs. “Then he and I don’t have a relationship.”
“He’s a big part of your life, Dori. Don’t discount that.”
“I’m not, but you’re my future, and our relationship takes priority.”
My body relaxes. “Then I hope he can get where you need him to be.”
She nods but gazes away. My spidey senses fire. There’s more to this than she’s telling me.
“Dori, is there something else that you want to share with me?”
Her wary eyes come to mine. Her face is tight and covered in questions.
She places her hand on my knee. “Please know that I’m not trying to pry. I know you have history with other women.”
I straighten my spine. “What’s that got to do with Aiden?”
He must have said something to her. My blood heats.
Her cheeks grow red. “He saw the marks on my wrists. He told me it was dangerous to be with you because of your sexual preferences.”
Fucking great.
Him saying something like that is a dick move. That’s all I need is him relaying information to Dori about my past.
I try to calm my rapid breathing. “Is that all he said?”
“No.” She lowers her head. “He told me about the girl whose shoulder was dislocated.”
