“Stop.” I pull away. “You’re embarrassing yourself.” I shrug her off and take another step, but she blocks my path, and the next thing I know she has her mouth on mine.

CORA

“I think I’ll get the new triple cheeseburger with onion rings,” Tor said.

We’d picked him up from his pack house first as it was the closest to the cabin. I’d dropped Leif a text to let him know we were on our way to him, but he hadn’t replied yet.

Maybe he was still out on patrol?

“I’m getting a kebab,” Rune said decisively.

“Fries,” Wren piped up from the toddler seat beside me, looking adorable with his tiny legs and squishy face.

Tor had insisted on the seat for safety reasons.

“You can have whatever you want, buddy,” Tor said. “You want ice cream too?”

“Wren love Tor.”

I caught Tor’s grin in the rearview. “Yeah, you do.”

“Hey, what about me?” Rune asked.

“Wren love Rune too,” Wren said seriously. “Wren love Leif and Cora and Sloane and—”

“Whoa!” Tor said. “Let’s not ruin it. How about we go back to how much you love me?”

I giggled, shocking myself, and then guilt stabbed at me because Jasper wasn’t here, and I had no right to feel happy without him. My mood must have been infectious, because the atmosphere in the car was instantly somber.

“We’ll get him back, Cor,” Tor said softly.

“Promise,” Rune added.

I exhaled and nodded. “Let’s just get Leif and grab some food. I’m fucking starving.”

“Here we are,” Rune announced, navigating the car through the gates to Vita Pack and down the track that led to the main pack house.

The headlights swept over the hulking shape of our Rover and then over two figures pressed so close together they were almost one.

Two familiar figures.

Leif and Astrid.

She had her hands on his face, and his hands were on her shoulders. He shoved her away and she stumbled back, silver hair swinging against her waist. I caught the flash of anger on my mate’s face as he wiped at his mouth with the back of his hand, and the situation was clear.

Tor cursed under his breath.

“Shit,” Rune muttered.

“Cora, did that girl kiss our Leif?” Wren asked.

Blood thundered in my ears and heat spiraled through my body as the unnamed thing inside me surged up to take over. I climbed out of the car, body vibrating with rage, and strode toward Astrid. She turned to me with a smirk that soon fell when she caught sight of my expression.

She made a soft squeaking sound and took a step back.

“Yes, bitch, you better run.” Was that my voice? Deep, rough, and bestial?
