“She lies and she makes me forget. I know it now, but I won’t let her stop me. Not this time. Not when so much is at stake.”
She drifted closer, a look of menacing determination on her face.
Sloane pulled me away from her. “Meredith, what the fuck?”
“What’s going on here?” Anna asked from behind us.
Meredith’s gaze flew over my head in alarm. “No. Not this time.” She rushed me, and ice filled my veins.
I was in a large, lavish room filled with several people dressed all fancy. Music played and people stood about eating canapes. Colorful tapestries hung on the walls and two huge chandeliers dangled from the domed ceiling.
“Evelyn will be so happy,” a woman beside me said.
Evelyn…Why did that name sound familiar?
I turned my head to look at the speaker. It was Dottie. I mean, she looked more put-together than she did as a ghost, but it was her in the flesh.
“If she can stop being sick.” The words came from my mouth, but not my mouth.
I was in someone else’s body.
“First trimesters are always hard,” Dottie said. “But I made sure to prepare foods she can stomach. The ceremony will be beautiful.”
A pregnancy…
“The baby will be powerful just like its mother,” I said with a mouth that wasn’t my own.
“And not everyone is happy about that.”
“It is nature’s way. This is what we’ve created. Evelyn and her mates protect humanity. The power of their union is what keeps Croatoan at bay.”
What? Shit…Evelyn Rose from the painting. The first anchor. Pregnant? What the fuck? How was that possible? What the heck was happening here?
“Oh, I know, dear,” Dottie said. “But not all witches feel comfortable with Evelyn having access to so much power.”
“I assume you’re referring to Anna and her little group of friends.”
“I’m worried, Mer.”
“Don’t be. They can moan and groan all they like, butweare the council, and our decision is final. I don’t see a problem. I’ve looked ahead. All is calm.”
The doors at the far end of the room opened and a woman strode in flanked by three huge guys.
It was Evelyn Rose. The guys must be her mates. My gaze dropped to her abdomen. No bump yet. The pregnancy must be early on.
I moved forward, trapped in Meredith’s body, and Evelyn smiled warmly at me.
“Thank you for this,” Evelyn said.
“A blessing on our anchor-to-be.” Meredith looked down at Evelyn’s abdomen. “She will be a powerful witch.”
“How can you be sure it’s a girl?” Evelyn asked with a slight frown.
“Oh, I know. It’s my gift to know, and she will be beautiful.”
Evelyn’s smile widened.
“A daughter,” one of the guys said with a soft smile.
