There was only one thing left to do. I opened my mouth and screamed, “Jasper!”

JASPER

“Listen, you pathetic excuse for a blood witch, if you don’t tell me what I need to know, then I’ll rip out your throat.” I smile coolly across the table at the witch in question.

To give her credit, she barely blinks before picking up her tankard and draining the contents.

“You can try, but I’ll have you ejected from this place before you can lay a finger on me.”

“I don’t need to touch you to tear out your throat.”

Ah, finally a flash of fear in those pretty gray eyes.

“Look, I can’t help you. I can help your anchor help you, and she knows this, but there’s nothing I can do for you directly.”

“Why not?”

“Because she’s the only thing standing between you and the abyss. You do this without her and you risk being lost forever. Is that what you want?”

Her gaze is shrewd. She knows I won’t take that risk.

“You’ll do what we need without exacting a price.”

“No.”

Is she seriously denying me? “No?”

“I need fuel to do the spell required.” She sits forward, elbows braced on the table. “You know how it works, malevolent.”

Fuck. I do. The price has to be exacted from the individual who needs the favor. It’s how the bitch who held me captive always did things. I was hoping that wasn’t a rule. I guess I’m wrong. It doesn’t happen often, so I’ll let it slide this time.

“Then take the price from me.”

Her eyes light up. “Now that is a proposition.”

“Then it’s a d—” Pain lances through my chest, and I hear Cora scream my name.

I don’t think.

I react and make the jump to her.

CORA

The wind ripped Jasper’s name from my lips, smothering it in a howl as it rose up around me.

My body left the ground, no longer in my control, as the warlock levitated me up and over the railing.

“Stop. Don’t do this.” I was pleading and it made me sick, but fuck, I did not want to die. Not now, not like this. “Please.”

Movement behind the warlock caught my eye.

Jasper! Oh, God. Thank God.

Rage painted his features as he took in the scene. He raised his hand and vanished into thin air.
