I take an angry bite of my muffin. It’s filled with sweet jelly. Not bad.

Adi grins and shakes her head. “You have stuff on your face.” She indicates the mouth area.

I sweep my tongue out to catch the sweet stuff.

She rolls her eyes, leans across the table, and wipes the corner of my mouth with her thumb and then…she fucking sucks it.

She fucking sucks her thumb clean. It’s such an innocent act, a tiny caring action, but it hits me hard in the solar plexus.

I want her.

I want her for myself.

“Curo, baby, you never called.”

A shadow falls over us and my chest burns with annoyance. I look up at the woman. A conquest I barely recall.

I give her my coldest smile. “And what does that tell you?”

She blinks sharply but recovers fast, mouth turning down. “Fuck you, Curo.”

She stalks off.

“I believe you already did that,” I call after her.

“You don’t have to be such a dick, you know?” Adi says.

I sip my hot chocolate. The encounter has allowed me to regain my equilibrium. “Oh? And what would you suggest?”

She studies me speculatively. “Keeping it in your pants until you find someone worthy of getting it out for.”

“Did you just call me a slut?”

Her eyes twinkle. “No, but the fact your mind went there should tell you something.”

She takes a deliberate sip of her drink, using the pause to gather her thoughts and choose her words. I’m intrigued as to what she’ll say next, which is fucked up because usually I don’t care what comes out of a woman’s mouth, only what I can successfully put in it.

“You’re hot, Curo. Like super sexy.”

Okay. I was not expecting that. But I can work with it. “You think so.”

She leans across the table and runs a finger down my cheek. “Beautiful.” Her tone drips with sincerity. “I bet you’re fucking awesome in bed too.”

“I wouldn’t expect you to take my word for it when you can find out for yourself.”

Her fingers linger at my jaw, regret tinging the warmth in her eyes. “I doubt it’s worth getting my heart trampled on.”

“Sex doesn’t have to be about the heart.”

“It is for me, Curo.” She lightly touches my bottom lip with her finger and a fizz of awareness shoots through me. “So, what are you?” She’s back in her seat, hot chocolate in hand.

It takes a moment for my pulse to slow. “I’m a lich.” What the fuck? I don’t talk about this shit. Not to anyone. “What did you do?”

She frowns. “What do you mean?”

“You made me tell you.”

She gives me a wary look. “I didn’tmakeyou do anything, Curo.”
