Wendall snags him around the waist and hauls him away from a bloody Rafe. “Fuck, Bobby, what the hell?”
“He attacked her. He attacked my Toni. The bastard. You fucking bastard. You assaulted her.”
Pindrop silence follows his declaration.
Rafe hawks and spits out a gob of blood. “She wanted it, all fucking doe-eyed and shit, then she changes her mind. Like fuck is that right.”
Bobby fights against Wendall’s grip, desperate to whale on Rafe some more. Heck, if I were Wendall, I’d have let him go.
“She was a prospect,” Bobby yells. “She was new. She looked up to you and you tried to violate her. She got away from you and she didn’t tell anyone. It was your word against hers and she didn’t want to lose her spot here.”
Bobby had been subbing at another club back then. I remember his return and his reaction to Toni. They’ve been together ever since.
“I’m going to kill you, Rafe,” Bobby promises.
“Enough!” Spectre booms. “I think you’ve heard enough to make a decision, right, Curo?”
“We vote now,” Curo says.
Everyone casts their vote by placing either a red stone or a white stone into a bag. Red means he’s out of the Grave Spirits and white means he stays.
Curo pulls five stones from the bag.
Rafe makes a sound of distress. “You can’t do this. You can’t kill me for this.”
“You broke one of our cardinal rules,” Warren says. “You can no longer carry our badge.”
“Blood in, blood out,” Curo says.
“Blood in, blood out,” the others echo.
Spectre stands abruptly, his body tense, his golden eyes glazed.
My scalp prickles, and when he rushes out of the room, I know there is only one reason for his exit.
Adi’s in danger.
CHAPTERFIFTEEN
ADI
“Adi, Adi, can you hear me?” Riley tapped my cheek.
I wanted to open my eyes, wanted to speak, but there was no energy in my body to do much else but lie on the cold ground and listen to them panic around me.
“Is she dying?” Jessie asked.
“No. I think she did something to the ghosts with her mojo,” Toni said. “It’s hurt her somehow.”
Feeling drained after forcing spirits to do your bidding was normal, but this…this was excessive, particularly considering the fact that I was on a leyline hotspot. Which meant that whatever had been controlling those ghosts was bloody strong.
“We need to get her back to the house,” Jessie said.
“She can’t ride if she’s unconscious,” Toni pointed out. “I’m calling a cab.”
A roar cut over her words and the earth trembled.
“What the fuck?” Riley’s grip on me slackened and another took its place. Warm hands…That scent…cedar, evergreen, and forest spaces.
