I spun to find Curo in the doorway, his expression masked by shadow.

“Where is he? Where’s Spectre?”

He entered the room, his gaze fixed on me. “Dax has some business out of the city. He sent Spectre instead.”

“He’s gone?” My throat was tight.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“A week, maybe two.”

Dax had done this. He was keeping us apart. Anger burned a path up my throat. “He had no right. No fucking right to send him away.” My hands balled into fists. “We’re not kids to be managed. We know the score.”

He bridged the distance between us. “Is that why you’re in his room late at night?”

Shit. The anger left me in a rush of breath. “Curo, I don’t know if I can do this.” My voice cracked. “I barely know him, but I need him. I can’t…I can’t do this.”

He cupped my shoulder. “Yeah, you can.” His eyes caught the moonlight, but the pupils dilated regardless, drinking me in. “I’ll make sure you do.”

“What? You mean you can take time away from your groupie?” God, I sounded bitter.

His mouth tightened. “Yeah, I can make time. You’ll be working with me and Logan the next few weeks.” He steered me from Spectre’s room and back to mine. “Get some rest.”

He pushed open my bedroom door.

I stepped inside and froze. The bed was empty, sheets rumpled.

Finley was gone. “No…”

“Adi…” Curo gripped me gently and turned me toward the wardrobe.

Finley was curled on the floor, back in cat form. He opened his eyes and fixed them on me. “And where have you been?”

He was back. My buddy was back, and maybe the next few weeks would be bearable after all.

CHAPTERNINETEEN

“This will look hot on you.” Riley held up a navy halter-neck top. “With those cream slacks you have.”

“You mean the ones that got all muddy when Curo took me out on the warehouse raid case last week?”

The top’s material shimmered in the bright interior of the clothing store. One of the high-end ones in Frostgate, but the MC got a steep discount here due to helping out the owner with some issue or other a few years back.

I studied the price tag and mentally deducted the discount, which took it down to a regular price.

Riley winced. “He should have warned you the warehouse was surrounded by boggy land.”

I shrugged. “My fault for wearing cream on a job. It was kinda fun chasing the bad guys. Drake navigated the terrain like a pro, not that they were gonna get far in that van of theirs.”

“Don’t you mean Curo navigated like a pro?” She pressed back a smile.

“Nah, cos that would mean giving Curo credit for something.”

She caught her lip between her teeth, a characteristic move when she was contemplating whether to say something or not.

“What?”
