The pulse in my throat throbbed. “Of course. We’re friends, right?”

His eyes darkened. “Yeah, Adi. Always.”

I smiled to hide the longing surging through me. Logan was smart and funny, and he understood me on an intellectual level no one ever had. But he was taken, and soon, so would I.

I’d hoped this thing between us was one-way on my part, but the sketches he’d done of me shattered that delusion. It made it all the harder to pretend.

Because Logan liked me too.

But there was nothing either of us could do about it.

CHAPTERTWENTY-TWO

Mystic Mayhem was a restaurant that turned into a club after eleven p.m. and stayed open until dawn, not that I planned on being out that late. At least that had been the plan, but now that we were here, I was ready to change my mind.

It had been too long since I’d been out and had some fun.

Dancing…heck, I’d forgotten I enjoyed it, that I was good at it. I sipped my third beer and shook my head when Riley tried to pull me back onto the floor.

“Come on, please do not make me dance alone with Chrissy.”

“Jessie is with you.”

She narrowed her eyes. “You better join us for the next one.”

I raised my bottle. “As soon as I’m done.”

I needed a breather, but the hellhound ladies didn’t seem to need one. I leaned back against the bar, scanning the revelers and enjoying my ice-cold beer.

Chrissy’s blond head came into view, then vanished again. To be honest, she wasn’t so bad on a night out. Social, chatty, she’d even talked the bouncer into letting us cut the queue and get in for free.

The woman had skills.

The problem was that she’d been matched with Logan. A guy who preferred a night in to a night out. Who liked long walks with a hot beverage in hand. The mismatch was causing friction, and everyone was picking up on it. Heck, who was I kidding? I wanted Logan to myself, and the fact that I couldn’t, but someone like Chrissy who was totally wrong for him could, made it all the harder. Why couldn’t he be with someone more suited to him. Why couldn’t henotbe attracted to me. It would make it so much easier for me to not have feelings for him.

This wasn’t Chrissy’s fault, and it wasn’t Logan’s either. They were making the best of an awkward situation.

I spotted Chrissy as she stepped out of the crowd of dancers and raised my hand. She didn’t look my way; her attention was elsewhere. I tracked her gaze to a guy by the opposite bar. The strobe lights made it difficult to discern his features, but he was short and stocky. Chrissy made a beeline for him. Wait, were they holding hands? Shit. People, get out of the way.

I craned my neck to see past the group who’d interrupted my line of sight, but Chrissy and the mystery guy were gone.

A woman walked past me and then doubled back, raking me over with a glow in her eyes.

“Oh, my dear, there’s darkness closing in on you.”

I looked down at her. “Tell me something I don’t know.”

She frowned. “This is no joke. I see it clear as day.”

“I’m sure you do.” I took a swig of my beer, ignoring the tremor in my belly.

“You need to be wary,” she insisted.

I leaned in with a tight smile. “And you need to go find your friends and enjoy your evening. Let me worry about my darkness.”

She backed off with a frown and a shake of her head.

She wasn’t the first psychic to give me unsolicited advice and she wouldn’t be the last. The only difference was, now that I knew about Dralos, the warnings felt more ominous.
