My chest ached for him, for me, for this whole mess. If there was no conduit, I might have been able to claim him as mine. “I’m sorry, Logan. You deserve to be happy.”

“We all do.” His smile was wry. “Even Chrissy.”

He looked so forlorn that the urge to hug him had me leaning toward him before I could check myself. I slid my seat back instead. “I’m gonna shower and change before Spectre gets back.”

Logan grabbed my hand as I made to leave, and tingles raced over my skin at the contact. “Adi, it’s probably best you sit this one out.”

“What?”

“Dax doesn’t want you and Spectre spending time together.”

I bit back my annoyance. “I’ve been working on the enforcement team for weeks now. I’m not sitting this out, especially when I might be able to help.”

“Adi—”

“No. If Dax has an issue with that, then he can take it up with me. Spectre and I are grown. We can handle being on a case together without falling into mate lust.”

He released me and I headed up to my room. I was halfway up the stairs when I heard Chrissy speaking to someone.

“No, I know… I miss you too…I promise…Tomorrow night…love you.”

What the fuck? I took the stairs two at a time and caught her tucking her phone into her robe pocket.

She looked up guiltily.

“Was that the guy from the club?”

She opened and closed her mouth a couple of times and then pressed her lips together. “None of your business.”

“Maybe not, but it’s Logan’s business.”

She whirled on me. “So then tell him. I don’t give a shit. It’s not like he wants to be with me. You think I haven’t seen the way he looks at you?”

“He hasn’t done anything about it, though. He’s been loyal.”

“Physically maybe, but not up here.” She tapped her temple. “Up here he’s all about you. The other night he said your name in his sleep.” She made a ragged sound of frustration. “I don’t blame him. Neither of us wants this. We’re pawns playing a part, and I’m sick of it.”

How could I get all righteously indignant with this female when I’d been oscillating between three guys myself. “I’m sorry, Chrissy.” I meant it.

She sucked in a breath and nodded. “Look. This thing between Logan and me…I’m going to speak to him. I’m done pretending. I think…I think it will be better for us all if we admit that what we have is a business arrangement and nothing more. He can see who he likes, and I can be with the man I love.”

“Ben?”

She nodded, her expression softening. “He’s a good man. A kind man. Just not the right bloodline for my elitist family.”

“Can’t you tell them to shove it? I mean, it’s your life.”

“You have a lot to learn about hellhound royalty, and considering that the Storm bloodline is one of the elite, you should really brush up on it.” She padded off down the hall and up the next flight of stairs. “Goodnight, Adi.”

Well, wasn’t this a night of revelations?

I pushed the door to my room open, flipped on the light switch, and froze as the scent of blood hit me. My gaze zeroed in on the smears of it on the windowsill, then down to the neat bloody pawprints on the carpet.

Finley?

Finley was hurt.
