I lift my chin. “She can have every drop for all I care. She’s my mate and her life comes first.”
“Very noble,” Curo drawls. “But dying to save her life is one thing, dying to prolong it for an extra hour is stupid. We need a permanent fix.”
“We need to get hold of this Tobias guy!” Logan pushes past me into the room. “Where’s her phone?”
“Where’s Finley?” Curo asks.
The cat-sith is gone, probably through the partially open window smeared with…wait, is that blood?”
The distinct vibration of a phone fills the room. Logan retrieves it from an unconscious Adi’s pocket.
“Unknown number.” He answers and hits the speaker.
“Who is this?” a male voice demands. “Where’s Adi?”
“Who are you?”
A sound of exasperation. “Tobias. I’m a friend of Adi’s and it’s imperative I speak to her this instant.”
“Well about time,” Dax snaps. “Where the fuck have you been.”
“Dax?”
“Yeah, it’s me. You need to get your ass over here right now. Something’s wrong with Adi.”
“She collapsed and won’t wake up,” Logan says. “Spectre channeled energy into her but it’s not enough.”
“Spectre? How… never mind, I’m almost with you. Thirty minutes out.”
I step forward. “Do you know what’s wrong with Adi.”
“Yes.” His tone is tight. “Adi is dying.”
CHAPTERTHIRTY-ONE
LOGAN
Chrissy looks up from her cup of tea as I enter the room. “Is she okay?”
I feel awful because my fiancée is hurt but all I want is for her to leave so I can focus on Adi.
I’m a bad person.
An awful person.
Chrissy sighs and lowers the ice pack from her head. “Sit down, Logan. It’s time we had a frank discussion.”
I pull out a chair and sit. The least I can do is hear her out, whatever she has to say. “Go on.”
“I think you’re in love with Adi.”
I open my mouth to protest, then snap it closed again. I can’t lie to her. I don’t want to. “I didn’t plan on it. I’m sorry. I swear to you nothing has happened between us and it won’t. You’re my betrothed and I’ll mate with you like agreed.”
She shakes her head. “That’s just it. I don’t want you, Logan. I’m in love with someone else too. I have been for a long time.”
Relief makes me lightheaded but then I remind myself that what we feel doesn’t matter. “I’m sorry.”
She smiles sadly. “So am I. I know how important this is to our families. But I’m not as unselfish as you. I can’t continue with this ruse any longer.”
