The female gargoyles were enthralled and so were a couple of the males to be honest, but my focus was shot.
“I’m going to check on Cam.”
“What?” Sharniza frowned. “She’s not back yet?”
“No. I’ll get her.”
I slipped from the room and headed upstairs. Wait, was her door open? “Cameron?”
The room was empty, and the window was open, drapes billowing inward. A pair of sneakers lay by the bed.
“Cam?”
The bathroom door was open too, but the washroom was empty. A sixth sense drew me to the window and there, far below, was a figure in gym shorts and a T-shirt. It was Cam. I was sure of it. And she was headed into the woods.
Ice sluiced through my veins.
I took the stairs back down so fast I almost knocked Sharniza off her feet as she was coming up.
“What is it?” she demanded. “Where’s Cam.”
“Headed to the woods. There’s something wrong with her. She left her sneakers behind, and she’s walking in a zigzag.”
“What?”
“We have to stop her.”
Sharniza grabbed me. “It’s fine. It’s okay. She won’t be able to get in. Only omegas and invited males can get into the forest on an omega moon, remember?”
Why didn’t that make me feel better?
We hurried down the stairs and out into the night before morphing and taking flight.
“There she is!” Sharniza pointed. “Edge of the forest.”
I swooped closer. “Cam!”
She continued to amble toward the trees.
“Cam, stop!”
“Don’t worry,” Sharniza said from above. “The wards will smack her on her ass any moment—”
The air fizzed and Cameron vanished.
She was in the woods with the omegas. How was this possible?
“We have to get Serath,” Sharniza said. “If she’s managed to get into the forest then the only person that can get her out is someone connected to her on a metaphysical level.”
“Serath.”
CHAPTER49
CAMERON
The world came into focus in increments. Silver light, the prick of bracken against my soles, the whisper of icy air against my naked skin.
I was awake.
